Album Notes
It's never too early to listen to Christmas music. My earliest musical memories are of the sounds of Nat King Cole, Lou Rawls, Mel Torme and Rosemary Clooney singing me into the season. When I decided to make a Christmas album, I knew right away that Nancy Wilson's That's What I Want for Christmas would be the title track. Larry Hall, my producer/arranger/orchestrator extraordinaire, wrote magical arrangements of these timeless classics. This album serves up a Christmas Feast full of Big Band, Cool Jazz, and Traditional Hymns, sprinkled with a helping of effervescent fun. Beautiful lyrics and luscious melodies spiced with big brass and steamy hot rhythms bring back those glorious crooner days.
We Three Kings was a surprise stand out. Choosing songs for the project, I suggested this old hymn. But, I thought we should take the meter in a different direction; a Dave Brubeck Take 5 type feel. We took that groove and made it our own. What a joy to have Chester Thompson, who was the drummer for Weather Report, Frank Zappa and Phil Collins, grooving that rhythm section. And every time I hear Dave Cleveland's killer guitar solo, I get Chicken Skin.
Giving a little nod to my love of Hawaii with Mele Kalikimaka, we chose to be true to the original sound of the late 1940's when Big Band, the Andrew Sisters, and Bing Crosby were swinging. But, I channelled my inner Bette Midler as well.
And amongst all the big productions lies the graciously simple Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
My Holiday Wish is that this album will become part of your family's Christmas traditions and surround you with Joy and Delight year after year.
