“THE COLIN SAPSFORD YEARS 1936-1980” JADCD 1112
Early music by GIOVANNI PALESTRINA, TOMAS LUIS DE VICTORIA
Music by Australian composers: DEREK STRAHAN, ERIC GROSS, MIRIAM HYDE, ROBERT ALLWORTH, ANN CARR-BOYD,.
Total duration: 63.02

COLIN SAPSFORD 1908-1996 was a founder member in 1960 and early president of the organ society of Sydney, Australia. He was appointed by the Rector of Christchurch Saint Laurence, Reverend Father John Hope in 1936 and served as director of music, organist and master of choristers until early 1980. Throughout those almost 44 years his choir members attended all regular services, which were many, including weddings, funerals, ABC broadcasts, telecasts and recitals in other venues. Here is a selection of music performed throughout the Colin Sapsford Years.

Composers such as Giovanni Palesrina, Tomas Luis de Victoria, John Keble & CV Stanford, whose music is heard here, were often performed in Christchurch Saint Laurence. Other music featured is by Australian composers such as Miriam Hyde (1913-2005). Her piano work “The Vision of Mary Mackillop, played here by Miriam Hyde in a 1993 recording, was composed in May 1992 at Oxford, UK, and first performed by the composer in 1993 for the national launch of the Mary Mackillop commemorative Toile at St. Joseph’s, North Sydney.

Robert Allworth’s ‘Vision of Lourdes” is played by Carson P. Cooman at the organ of the Memorial Church, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Other works by Allworth are “The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary”, played on piano by Miriam Hyde, and “Appearing of the Blessed Virgin Mary”, for mandolin duo, played by Adrian and Paul Hooper, a work dedicated to Pamela gross, wife of composer Eric gross, His “Processional” and “Gerburtstagsgruss", a birthday greeting to Lawrence Bartlett, are both played by Bartlett on Sydney church organs. Bartlett also plays Ann Carr-Boyd’s “Sydney Twilight”.

In contrast, Derek Strahan’s “Fugue on a Theme for the Cross of Altantis” is extracted from a longer work, “Atlantis” for flute & piano, and played here by Belinda Gough and Josephine Allan.

This CD is dedicated to Diana Sapsford, wife of Colin Sapsford, to Charles Dale, a choir member of 27 years with Colin Sapsford, to Sr. Margaret J. Cusack, RSJ Sisters of Saint Joseph. Charles Dale and Diana Sapsford are heard as soloist in several tracks on this compilation.
