ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This release represents the first solo release for Cedric Givens. He has worked as a composer, producer, arranger and instrumentalist on various projects. His groups Nemesis Bleu and N-Groove achieved critical acclaim with their releases. Cedric wanted to do a project that was “all his artistic vision”. His goal is to push the genre forward with a fresh unique style and sound. The release features other great artists such as Ragan Whiteside, Drew Davidsen and John Tropea. He also introduces new comers Maria Stanton and Chris Tedesco in featured roles. The project is being introduced as an EP with the full release CD coming later in the year. Please check out the sound and let him know if you like where he’s going with the music.

Transcending Smooth Jazz
The smooth jazz genre, while a popular idiom among many jazz enthusiasts, artists, arrangers and composers has taken the path of least resistance by becoming flat and predictable in background music for commercial interruptions and call centers in many urban markets notwithstanding the growth of numerous internet stations that maintain a listener base commingled with R&B, Funk and World Music. There is a commentary and narrative about the evolution of jazz and the current formula. Jazz and smooth jazz in particular takes on many forms and that is what makes it distinctly unique for all of its formidable patronage across the spectrum. So who’s really listening?
Cedric Givens, a multi-talented instrumentalist has orchestrated a composite EP (Extended Play) release. Within that context, the titled release “One of a Kind” accentuates lead vocals and vocal harmonics. The romantic clarity and phrasing of the vocalist immediately captivates, setting the mood for the quiet storm and after 6. Track 2, “Old Skool Love”, is the masterful artistry of chord progressions timed and balanced in tandem by the precision of horn arrangements, the syncopation of a driving bass mixed with an array of rhythmic percussion. That theme is to be continued in another movement out front to a commanding fluegelhorn solo in Track 3, “All of Me”. In the last movement, the listener can drift into an instrumental reprise to the lyrics in “One of a Kind”.
“One of a Kind” is Mr. Givens offering to the eclectic audience who loves music and a melodic and meaningful style often imitated but rarely delivered in the manufactured litany of usual suspects who have been unable to transcend smooth jazz. As a consumer of entertainment in this multifaceted industry of art and the performing arts, let your medium of sound connect to the essence of what makes good jazz, great jazz.
