Review from the Fall 2009 Autoharp Quarterly
It was a bright, crisp mid-September day when I opened the mailbox and found a new CD from John & Heidi Cerrigione. I ripped open the package and my eyebrows went up a bit. A Christmas CD? Does the world really need another Christmas CD? Read on.

Joy to the World is the 3rd CD released by John & Heidi and is an all instrumental collection of Christmas standards along with some not so well known tunes. The shear number of instruments they play, and play well, continues to grow and amaze. In various combinations you’ll hear Autoharp, Hammered Dulcimer, Mountain Dulcimer, Accordion, Piano, Guitar, Banjo, Acoustic Bass and Akkordzither.

The Akkordzither is a Swiss instrument with 68 strings. If you picture 2 Autoharps side by side and no chord bars you’ll get the idea. The left hand strums groups of strings to produce chords and the right hand picks the melody with a thumbpick. The sound is a wee bit like a cross between a Harpsichord, Autoharp and Hammered Dulcimer. Heidi plays this on 3 tracks and really stretches it out on Christmas Carol a tune from the Zion Harp Hymnal.

John & Heidi know what instruments will work in an arrangement and where to put them. On some of the arrangements and phrasings Heidi’s Swiss roots peek through giving the CD a nice uncomplicated feel. It’s hard to imagine an Accordion on a Christmas CD but it shows up on 3 tracks and handles both rhythm and melody well. The Autoharp makes an appearance on 9 of the 16 tracks. John’s clawhammer banjo on Go Tell it on the Mountain and Joy to the World bring a nice upbeat old-time feel to the music.

Two tracks, The First Noel and What Child is This, feature John on a nylon string acoustic guitar. The softer sounds of the nylon strings are a nice change from the sometimes sharp tone of steel strings.

As you listen to the different combination of instruments you begin to wonder how they pulled this off. Were they running around the room picking up and putting down multiple instruments for each track or is the person who pushed the buttons a master at transitions. It probably doesn’t matter and I did not hear any flaws in the recording.

John & Heidi are quite talented and 2 of the nicest folks you’d ever want to meet and their new CD, Joy to the World, is a wonderful collection of time honored Christmas music that will bring you into the spirit of the season and make a nice addition to your holiday collection.
