Album Notes
Packin' Light is the 2nd E.P. from songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chad McCoy, and his first time working with Juno award-winning producer and madman Siegfried Meier. (2013 Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year:  Woods of Ypres, "Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light") A high-energy 3 track Indie-Rock album, with songs about self discovery and the joys of the open road, Packin' Light hits hard and heavy while maintaining a buoyant joyfulness.

“Great Team! is the latest from Chad McCoy, and it bounces along in that Hold Steady sort of tradition. Gruff vocals and pop hooks don't always blend seamlessly, but there's no question they do here.” - Adam Carter, In The Key Of C, CBC Radio

Chad McCoy - "The songs come from my travelling days, when I was roaming from seasonal job to seasonal job, and just generally wandering all over the world. I always had a guitar with me and would write these little songs, like little devotionals to the road and to the wandering life. Not all of the songs survived, and some of the ones that did were crap, but a few of them had legs, and became the songs heard on my first E.P, A Few Crumbs, 1 of 2, and the three songs on Packin Light"

While the songs were written during the same time, what was different for this album was a commitment to getting the bed tracks right. "The first E.P. was recorded while I was living in a Mercury Villager mini-van in downtown Toronto, so it was more of an on-the-fly, off-the-cuff sort of thing. For Packin' Light I wanted to get a solid foundation to build on, and that's where Siegfried Meier comes in. I spent the day with Siegfried at his excellent Beach Road Studios, and with Rob Eckert on bass, and Jason Adair on drums, we tore through the songs and Siggy recorded some high quality takes."

The next step of the recording process often involves doing overdubs in the studio, but Chad decided to follow his gut and his Community Music heart and took the songs out into the world, recording in various locations with a mix of friends and strangers, professional musicians and amateurs. This approach took him all over, recording saxophone parts with Bruce Mackinnon in a basement in Toronto, working with a trio of multi-talented siblings in a community hall in rural Nova Scotia, having a good friend and excellent chef sing backup vocals while babysitting, and even cajoling his nieces and nephews to yell "Great Team!" into a microphone while at a family event.

The resulting songs were then mixed and mastered by Siegfried Meier, who took the mix of ideas Chad had given him and turned it into the invigorating E.P. that it is Packin' Light. "I'm super pleased with the results, and I think the way we went about recording it really did service to the songs and to the time period of my life when they were written. I'm looking forward to making more music with the skills I learned this time around."
