Chance: The First Five Demos

by Chance

Ok, take Queens of the Stone Age and put it in a blender, but with what? Radiohead? Foo Fighters? Shiner? It's a start, you're getting there. You say "No, REALLY bend my mind." Ok, add a dash of Bjork, a hint of Coldplay, and a smidge of Outkast.

Album Notes
Chance...
After years leading a band called Portable ...
(2 nationally released albums, Woodstock '99 etc)

2004: Chance goes solo. www.mynameischance.com. Begins building burgeoning fan base and grass roots spreading of the good word.

Releases MP3 singles about once a month on web site. Served up as mini-events, each single contains, lyrics, online poster, samples, alternate version (sometimes), genesis (how the song came to be) and geek out(you'll understand it when you see it.)

After 5 singles are released...

October 2, 2004: Chance releases 1st 5 demos as an online only CD EP. This EP is written, performed, recorded and produced by Chance (but also includes his take on Radiohead's Creep.) All songs are also individually available as downloadable mp3 format.

April 12th, 2005: Debut of MyNameisChance Comix, an online comic strip at mynameischance.com. Stories by Chance and illustrations by the talented artist, Zero.

One more thing: The Friends of Chance Cover Song. All in good fun, the fans on the Friends of Chance Message Board suggest then vote on a song for me to cover. Once the song is decided, I re-imagine, record and release exclusively for them on my board. The first was Creep (Radiohead), the 2nd When Doves Cry (Prince) and the latest is the Milkshake Song (Kelis). That's right, the Milkshake song.
It's just my way of giving back.

I am underground...for now.

A brilliant wave of music...
Many artists start as a solo act to engage the full effect of having more expression in the music. Chance is one of those people who can easily hold his own. He starts his demo EP, Chance delivers a brilliant wave of music. His vocal range can be compared to John Lennon’s or Paul McCartney, and Thom Yorke. He has hard banging beats with well written lyrics. It makes you question why do bands like The Jets or the Music are signed while Chance hasn’t. His song writing and arrangement is incredible. Chance not only shows his musicianship with his own music, he is just as talented with remixes as well. The Spanish version of ‘Say What You Will’ is nicely a great twist to his own original song. In the remake of Creep, this artist you can hear the unique take from Chance’s vision to the original.

Song recommendation: Get his albums...they are worth it!!

A Great Rock sound. Absolutely cracking stuff.
I first came across this band via a podcast simulcast, where 30 plus podcasts, published a live concert of Chance simultaneously. I have to say, that after listening to the 40 minute podcast, I was totally blown away. By the way, you can listen to this simulcast by Googling "chance simulcast", it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I can't believe, as I so often do with the bands I find, that I haven't come across this band before. Saying that however, the first track, Say What You Will, does sound very familiar and I'm not talking about the fact that the band does sound very similar to James, the Verve or the later solo Richard Ashcroft. I can just imagine hearing this single on the radio. They have a great rock sound, with the occasional mellow melodic phase. Absolutely cracking stuff.

So what does this album have in store. Well firstly let me say, that this is more of an EP than a full size album. In Chance's own words "I release singles about once a month. After 5, I release a CD compilation. On each CD I add two extra tracks that could be just about anything.". So on this CD we find 5 original songs, one remix and an excellent cover of Radiohead's, Creep. The actual track listing is :

* Say What You Will
* My Oh My
* Percy's Song
* Won't Be a Next Time
* Radio Free
* Bonus - Say What You Will (hispanical version)
* Bonus - Creep by Radiohead

So for just $5 plus minimal shipping, you can get yourself a nice shiny new CD in the mail. An unusual concept offered, but one I think is very neat, is the multipack. You can basically buy the album in quantities of 5, 10 or 25 for fantastically reduced rates. For example you can get 25 copies of the album for $50, that's just $2 per CD. An excellent way to spread the word and support the band.

Conclusion : This is a band that is going to go a long way. I think we'll be hearing a lot of them in the future.
