Changeling Troupe 1975: The Legacy Recordings

by Travis Edward Pike

In 1975, musician friends and I formed Changeling Troupe. I agreed to produce the album of my rock opera, Changeling, and they agreed to play on the recordings, but I ran out of money before I ran out of material, and we never finished the album.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The music speaks for itself, but here’s a thumbnail sketch of the story, for interested readers. In Western mythology, a changeling was believed to be the child of a fairy or troll, placed in a human child’s cradle in place of the human child, who was then stolen and taken into their otherworldly realms. Apparently healthy babies, later discovered to suffer developmental disorders were believed by their parents and local villagers to be changelings. Infants born with a veil, were also considered changelings, and believed to be clairvoyant, or possess other supernatural abilities.
In my tale, Morgen (with an “e”), a rock superstar, has an out-of-body experience in Morningstone, a parcel of metaphysical real estate where Furies challenge him, Muses beguile him, and Fates still weave Man’s destiny. As to whether he is a grown human taken from us and returned as a changeling, or a changeling reared as human, who returns to his supernatural roots, is re-awakened to his otherworldly origins and returns to our world to fulfill his purpose, I deliberately left clouded. The story works either way, and the title, Changeling’s Return further acknowledges that the story’s title and origin have both been restored. My brother Adam and I have recovered the analog stereo tapes of Changeling Troupe’s Legacy Recordings from 1975 and I publishing them now to honor the original recordings by the Changeling Troupe, some of whom are no longer with us, and most of whom are no longer musicians, but I want them and the world to know that their efforts were not only precious, but important to this day, and that the environmental crisis we addressed in our otherworldly musical adventure is, in the face of climate change, more relevant today than ever before.
