Album Notes
Arising from the Ashes

A lifetime of music has shaped Charity\'s style into a melodic, sultry blues style which grooves through “You Are Love,” Charity’s debut album. By doing intense spiritual work, especially through her healing chants, she grew and transmuted her pain and frustration.

A conscious shift to be the peace she wished to see in the world has led this versatile and talented singer/songwriter Charity to a rhythmic spiritual practice that infuses each song with a new level of awareness. Sincere intentions of shapeshifting the planet, one song at a time, is the power behind her inspirational tunes.

My Mom

Raised in Mesquite, TX with parents of an artistic flair and free spirit bent contributed to Charity’s multifaceted expression. Her strikingly beautiful mother, Susan, a former Go Go dancer, always encouraged Charity to dance and sing, believing in the gifts her daughter had recognized beyond a mother’s bias. Carefree days of hanging out with mom, one of the rare women in the exporting/importing vintage clothes business, infused Charity with a strong will, keen business sense and long term, disciplined commitment to work. Yet it was her mother’s unconditional love and support that has been her touchstone of strength through all of these years.

My Dad

Charity’s handsome, hippie father, Phil, whose late night writing jams in the living room with fellow musicians invoked in her a path of the interplay of life laid out in rhythmic measure. Sneaking around the sofa to witness this process and be immersed in the energy, she knew early on that music was more than just singing. It became the driving force of creative expression of a fire underneath her unleashed in melodic patterns and hauntingly textured, beautiful songs which stirs the soul.

Music Training

Instilled in her at an early age was the unique song of her being. Recognizing this desire to be a singer/songwriter, at 14, Charity joined the choir and began voice lessons. The next year was spent cultivating her craft under the guidance of Mark Carroll. At 16, through a reference from a friend, she looked up Royce Cooper, voice coach with a theatrical background, and found a perfect match for both her style and wit.

Taking her under his wing, Royce put together comedy skits and girl group gigs leading to the formation of Jay and the Silhouttes, a 1950s and 60s mix, which played in festivals and theaters all around Dallas and Addison.

Infused with confidence and that fire, at 17 she landed a gig at the Pocket Sandwich Theater in Dallas.

Restless and anxious, she eagerly left home at 18 to pursue singing the blues. She packed her yellow, Volkswagen bug with minimal belongings and big dreams and headed to Austin, the emerging music capital of Texas. The next half a decade was spent singing with groups such as T Harvey Combo as well as performances as a back up singer for ER Shorts.

The musical backdrop of legendary greats such as Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor and many others infused her style with blues and passion. Weekends in Austin were spent singing around town at open mic nights, exploring different venues and styles while cultivating her soulprint in original mixes.

In 1996, having had her fill of the blues both professionally and personally, Charity moved back to Dallas to rejuvenate and settle into a different lifestyle. She married a year later and began a family, raising three, beautiful boys.

Full time motherhood put music on the backburner except for late night lullabies sung to each son. In between domestic duties, she sporadically sang with local Dallas artists. Burning embers of her creative fire still being stoked.

In 2003, her life was painfully altered by divorce which shook her to the core of her beliefs and being but also reignited the sleeping gift of her musical, life purpose. A single and devoted mother, she resurrected her desires by jumping back into the scene with long time friend, singer/songwriter Michael Gott who has mentored her these last several years.

Center for Spiritual Living

Wonderfully influenced by her new, spiritual community, the Center for Spiritual Living, Charity’s shift from underlying frustration to inner peace allowed change to flow through her songwriting. As her spiritual practice became her musical muse, Charity recognized the redemptive power of affirmative prayer infusing each chant with a sultry, seductive TRUTH leading the listener to their own inward journey. The call and response of blues was transformed into a call of positive action into SPIRIT.

Playful, funny, a bit goofy, beautiful, shy and vulnerable, Charity is wrapped in this powerful blend of laid back yet passionate presence onstage and off. From a distance, her soul speaks deeply through her eyes, sings through her heart and draws you closer to the PRESENCE. With the sincere intention of raising the consciousness of the planet one song at a time, her debut CD offers a celebration of a life transformed by TRUTH and ignited by fire.
