Album Notes
New York born and bred multi-instrumentalist and composer Charles Compo brings a fresh creative voice with his blend of edgy, electric jazz and modern composition. His latest solo effort, Mind Frame, is a recording that best features his unique flute improvisations as well his inspired arrangments and compositions. The CD was recorded at four different sessions over the last several years and features a bunch of veteran NY musicians. Ted Daniel and Curtis Fowlkes lay out the brass solos and backgroups, Ted on Trumpet and Curtis on Bone, most of the percussion is provided by Compo's long time friend and colleague Mustafa Ahmed although John Arrucci helps out with some truly exotic percussion. The sessions each had different Bass/Drum combinations: Mark Peterson and Jon Bates, Dave Patrick and Randy London, Jerry Brooks and Marco Giovini, and the keyboards are divided up between Tony Stewart (killer solo on At You With The Pistol), Matt Friedman, Jeff Miller and Ron Thompson. Dark White even features Compo's late father Peter Compo on the Violin.

Charles Compo has performed and recorded over the years with a diverse list of creative artist including William Hooker, Sahib Shehab and Sonny Sharrock. He has also performed with classic stars like Martha Reeves and with modern divas like Christina Aguilera. He has performed and been a featured artist at venues like The Hennessey Jazz Festival, The Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival and The Vision Festival as well as at legendary East Village clubs like CBGBs, The Pyramid Club, and Roulette.

His creative collaborations include work with legendary artist, filmmaker and musicologist Harry Smith. His compositions were used frequently in Smith’s live movie performances at the Filmmaker’s Collective and the Anthology Film Archives and he composed the score for Smith’s “Fragments of a Faith Forgotten”. Harry Smith introduced him to Moses Asch, and he was one of the last artists signed by Ashe to Folkways Records. He has also worked with an extensive list of choreographers and dance companies including Twyla Tharp, Luis Falco and Jose Limon.

Recording credits include Smithsonian Folkways, “Seven Flute Solos” Lakeside Records, “Psycho Jammy”, and Star labels “Seventh Moon”, William Hooker: “Radiation” (Homestead Records), “Great Sunset” and “The Distance Between Us” (Knitting Factory Records) “Lifeline” (Silkheart Records) “Radiation” (Homestead Records), Firmament Fury (Dodd) Vulnerability (ERL Records) with Donald Miller of Borbetomagus, and Doctor Phibes “Portable Darkness” produced by Don Fury. His group "The Phibes" (pronounced like vibes) has recorded two CDs “Soothing Music of the Savage Beast” and “The Phibes” on Lakeside Records.
