ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Bambi Wolf (formerly Bambi Jackson) & Alicia Ultan met up one cold eve in December of 2000 for a musical jam, each going away from the session thinking that there was no way they’d ever be able to blend their very different & individual musical styles. However, something drew them back together, and they performed their debut gig as the musical duo, Charmed, in January of 2001 at the Blue Dragon Coffee House in Albuquerque, NM, USA – packing the house! Since that time, they had beaucoup adventures, including playing duo gigs all over New Mexico; releasing their debut CD, Beautifully Twisted, in May of 2005 achieving a great response and reviews Internationally; winning the first NM Music Commission’s Talent Competition for budding new bands; claiming a nomination for their instrumental, Innbydelsen (composed by Bambi Wolf), from the 2006 NM MIC Awards; and celebrating the release of their 2nd CD – BitterSuite 7 – on December 13, 2008, to a packed, rowdy and cheering house of friends, family & fans at O’Niell’s Pub in Albuquerque.

In 2009, they celebrated 5 nominations from the New Mexico Music Awards, coming away with two awards - one for Best Arrangement of an Original Composition (composition & arrangement by Bambi Wolf), and Best Musical Performance New Age Contemporary (composition & arrangement by Bambi Wolf).

Their music takes many twists and turns, spinning tales of love, life, loss, rebirth and hope for their audiences, allowing people to feel, to cry, to laugh, to be healed, to walk away being refreshed, gaining a peace. Blending the beauty of guitar, piano, viola and vocals, Charmed’s music is reminiscent of the lyrical sweetness of Sarah McLachlan, the melodic moodiness of Tori Amos, the melancholy wistfulness of Fisher, the deeply emotional and powerful instrumentation of Delirium, and the straight-shooting sassiness of Lucy Kaplansky.

Presenting to the world their own deep & dark, sweet & sad, wistful & melancholy, sassy & sarcastic music - they have managed to weave a mystical spell around their audiences time and again!

One "Suite" Treat!
Finally, a “Buy One, Get One Free” deal you can believe in! Whether you buy Charmed’s new CD Bitter Suite 7 for the talents of Alicia Ultan (vocals, viola & guitar) or Bambi Jackson (vocals, piano, synth & bass), either way you’re getting a one heck of “two-fer.” Charmed has grown leaps and bounds both vocally and instrumentally from their first CD Beautifully Twisted. And that CD was a minor masterpiece. The addition of several accomplished musicians contributing lead guitar, drums, cello, saxophone and oud has really enhanced the Charmed sound and Bitter Suite 7 is nothing short of sheer genius. And that means “kudos” to producer John Wall for his recording and mixing talents in putting it all together. Repeated listening to this CD will not only have you asking what will Charmed do next, but when! To me Bitter Suite 7 is like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup; two musicians with two distinct styles creating one delicious sound. I’m not a musician but I know what I love and I love Charmed. Take a bite!

I saw these ladies at Indigo Crow and loved them! They were great at the jazz workshop this past summer and I couldn't wait for their new album. It was worth it. Thanks for making such beautiful music ladies!

BitterSuite 7
On their second CD, Bitter Suite 7, the “twisted folk” duo Charmed—Alicia Ultan and Bambi Wolf—once again take on the darkness and find the light. In 12 original, emotionally powerful songs, the pair explore love, loss, betrayal, memory’s hauntings, the search for a center, and the promise and sometimes redemptive certainty of love.

This time, on most tracks, the duo brings some friends along for the ride, including Rahim Alhaj (oud), Maud Beenhouwer (bass), Tim Gaulden (guitar), Claire Gentry (accordion), Benjamin Jackson (drums), Kanoa Kaluhiwa (sax), Jacqueline Ultan (cello), and coproducer John Wall (backing vocals). The two songwriters turn out to be accomplished arrangers, too, deftly deploying the expanded instrumentation to create a larger, richer stage for their stories.

Though they address troubling issues with an emotional intensity that sometimes invests their images with a near-magical reality, the music somehow, almost inevitably—maybe it’s in a turn of phrase, maybe it’s in an unexpected shift from minor to major, maybe it’s their tenderness and humor—finds reason for comfort and hope.

Bitter Sweet Victory...
Charmed’s second release is a shocker, in a few ways. Not only is it a tighter, better produced fusion of, say, Central European passion and bare-boned Celtic clarity, but it’s everything a band’s next album ought to be, and so often isn’t – a significant deepening and furthering of the songwriters’ crafts. Love is always the center of their stories, winning or losing, repairing or despairing. What feels distinctive about this work is not only its gorgeously improbable weavings of Brothers Quay film music, Stephen Foster ballads, Tony Hillerman’s spaces, and nuances of Kris Kristopherson, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Nick Drake, Fleetwood Mac, and points farther east – Turkey, Iraq...

What’s (secretly) radically new about this work is how accomplished these musicians have become in establishing a continuing sense of mutually-supported trance. Like those in a lucid dream, this CD sustains a rich series of visions, whose vital presence, emotional immanence, and necessarily entertaining beauty, open out to living mysteries. Buy this one right now, no problem.

Truly Charmed Follow-up
This is a first-rate follow-up to the "Beautifully Twisted" CD. It shows the two songwriters expanding and stretching their talents even further, and their forays into the personal take on the cast of the universal. Highly recommended -- an essential addition to any list of the best music of 2008-2009.
