Album Notes
Chelsea McBee has been filling the valleys and mountains of West Virginia with down home, soul stirring tunes for years. Along with her Random Assortment, the group has gained noticeable popularity with their creative interpretation of traditional music paired with the unique sounds of claw-hammer style banjo. Their music has been described anywhere from folk, americana to newgrass/jazzgrass.

Here is what Steve Chase of the Shepherdstown Observer had to say about the album: Fresh from a month long residence at The Opera House, Shepherdstown native Chelsea McBee is no stranger to the local music scene. She and her band The Random Assortment have a wide repertoire of live tunes, from rock standards and roots to country and disco. When I first heard about her new disc, the Kickstarter- funded The Whiskey Album, I imagined perhaps a female version of Corey Smith. What I actually found, as I listened to the set with a few glasses of Copper Fox Rye to set the atmosphere, was a blend of Millennial-influenced Appalachian roots tunes with some “trad” bluegrass thrown in, and a solid shot of Americana storytelling. McBee’s earthy vocals and banjo are complemented well by The Random Assortment, which includes Ben Witman on Mandolin, Jeremy Rodgers on Bass, with Melody Massimino and Teresa McBee on vocals. With the rye beginning to flow through my veins, I found the songs matching the progression of my whiskey sipping; starting with the old-time sound ofPour Yourself a Glass; and following up with my favorites Gone a Rye, Do Me Right Whiskey, and Try Again. The final song, The Parting Glass is sung a cappella and serves as a beautiful benediction to both my empty glass and this heartfelt and finely crafted set of tunes. I wouldn’t be surprised to see McBee and Band on the Elks Park Stage at Telluride Bluegrass sometime soon.
