Album Notes
Chiaroscuro is a project by writer/composer Richard Bradburn. A visual art term derived from the Italian words for light (chiaro) and dark (oscuro), "chiaroscuro" attempts to make three dimensional that which is two dimensional, to express light and dark through use of colour. With this project, Richard aims to explore the expression of light and dark through music, to make sound three dimensional, and to blur the boundaries between the narrative and expressionist forms.

Interlude is the first album from this project. It features eight compositions for solo piano. All are notable for a strong narrative form and although intensely modern, are very much in the classical tradition.

Included is a bonus track from the forthcoming orchestral album "Irish Suite".

Richard Bradburn is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and writer living in Ireland on the wild Atlantic margin. Much of his work is inspired by water, an elemental influence on any creative impulse in that part of the world! In "Raindrop" you can hear the mesmerising patterns of raindrops from a summer shower falling into a tree-fringed pool. "Tit Bonhomme" was inspired by the tragic loss of a local fishing boat with all but one of the crew in bad weather in the winter of 2012 and tells the story of the journey, a gentle sea passage that would end in violent tragedy dashed on the rocks at the entrance to Glandore harbour only a mile from safety (a donation to the local RNLI will be made for each album sold). "Rainy Sunday" is a meditation, looking out of a window on an overcast day when sea and land and sky seem to blur into grey. Other compositions are more personal, "Looking back", the sadness reflecting on a failed love affair and what might have been, "Laragh's Lullaby", written to send his young daughter to sleep when she was small, and "Harvest Moon", inspired by a spectacular and eerie giant orange Harvest Moon in the autumn of 2014, visible with stunning clarity in West Cork's pure air.
