ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Chord Four is four improvising composers exploring sound in space and culture, setting up original sound structures that resonate. Long time friends and former classmates combine to consistently strike a careful balance between rhythm and harmony in a blend of music ranging from jazz to avant-garde to Ghana to European art music. Andrew Conrad (Tenor Sax, Clarinet, Melodica) and Brandon Sherman (Trumpet, Flugel Horn, Melodica) blend melody, rhythm, and sound textures, expanding and challenging the traditional role of horn players; while Brandon Schmidt (Upright Bass) and Colin Woodford (Drums, Cymbals, Toys) lay down an extremely tight yet malleable foundation that is constantly influenced by the horns, the room, the day, and the mood. Together the four are the epitome of open ears and open minds; and the combined outcome is music to move to and be moved by—the result of friends building something honest together. Chord Four has over 4 hours of original music and its members have received multiple commissions and awards including the 2010 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer's Award.
