Album Notes
Chris Nauman is the real deal -- his songs are complete in the truest sense, fully inhabited, expressions of a studied self that demands to engage the world. To put it another way (and I'm far from the first to do so), his is folk music par excellence, songs finished and crafted with care, performed with the wit and passion that keep them open, pliable, inviting. They catch us with their hooks, and then we're happy to participate in their depth.
When he asked me to bring some post-oughts electronic tomfoolery to his recordings, I realized, as I'd always suspected, that any challenge I anticipated was my own illusion. He was, once again, as an artist and a father, welcoming me to join him.
These are political songs, songs that call for action beyond recognition, threnodies that insist on hope. We use the materials at hand to manifest our agency, to claim the truths we've gleaned and to give them away. Samples, square waves, some Chris Nauman songs. A rallying cry for the subversion of base, bloated powers. It's all synthesis.
