ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
You can sense Christina Stewart's warm devotion to Scottish tradition through her evocative vocals, but more than that, she brings ancient Celtic songs alive with an enchanting emotional authenticity. Dirty Linen described her voice as "the aural equivalent" of "warm, sweet, organic honey drizzling slowly from a honey wand."

She is recognised within her native Scotland and abroad as an engaging and knowledgable tutor of oral tradition, encompassing song, story and anecdote and her "Haunting" release reflects this. Folkwords described the album as "something of a rarity - a folk concept-style double album" which "raises the bar on the traditional interface between story and song... an absolute wealth of myth and legend".

The solid core of the album is the songs. Producer Terry Small began by recording Christina singing the songs, each in one take, without accompaniment, then brought in guitarist Martin MacDonald and cellist Jo Baird, to preserve the natural flow of the performances. Similarly, the spoken word tracks by Iain M Campbell, Andrew Mackintosh and Christina were recorded first as spoken, then the instrumental track from the corresponding song was re-crafted to fit the rhythm and dynamics.

The result is an album where the natural pace of song and spoken word is paramount, leading the listener on a journey into the eerie otherworld of the Scottish supernatural.
