ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

A gifted solo pianist and composer, Christine Brown’s music is a unique blend of contemporary, new age and classical sounds. With her graceful, elegant touch, Christine uses the piano to paint colorful landscapes with her thoughtful, musical interpretations of life’s emotions and experiences. “Ascend” is Christine’s 12th album, following the award-winning CD “Seamless”, awarded “Best Pop/Rock Piano Album 2016” by SoloPiano.com, her unique arrangements of classic cover songs, blending classical and new age pieces into clever medleys to create a sophisticated and seamless musical tapestry. “Souvenirs” was awarded “Best Solo Piano Album of 2014” by Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, selected from over 100 solo piano albums. Christine was also honored to be recognized by Kawai Pianos in 2014 as an official Kawai Piano Artist. Previous releases, “Promise” (2009) and “The Wishing Well” (2011), were both nominated by Whisperings for “Piano Album of the Year”. Her compositions have received numerous accolades, including named on “Mainly Piano Favorites List” for A Classic Christmas (2012), Souvenirs (2014), and Seamless (2016).

Since the young age of three, Christine has been fascinated by the piano. Receiving the highest honors given by the Guild National Piano Auditions, Christine’s childhood classical training is evident in her melodic and thematic compositions, while rich harmonies reflect her background in accompanying various choral groups. From Chopin to Joplin, her influences were varied and many, and she also enjoyed creating her own arrangements of popular songs. While earning a business degree at the University of Colorado Boulder, Christine was inspired by George Winston’s new age genre of solo piano, yet the piano remained only a hobby for many years.

“In 1990, my mother requested a cassette tape of my piano music for her birthday, so I went to a local recording studio. It was then that I rediscovered my passion for playing the piano, and I realized my gift to her was really her gift to me.” Sadly, her mother passed away just months later. Christine immersed herself into the piano to comfort her grief and voice her emotions, releasing heartfelt compositions that captured listeners. These early compositions were featured on well received solo piano compilation albums, Piano Portraits (1992) and Summer Stories (1994), distributed by Sugo Records. Christine was inspired to release her own solo piano CD, Winter Tapestry (1997). Married and raising two young sons, she also arranged collections of children’s songs, Childhood (2004) and Childhood II (2011), Believe (2004), Christmas On My Mind (2004), and Piano Stories (2006).

Christine’s fans have written, “There is a richness to your sound, a refined elegance and passionate intelligence that could only come from working hard at your craft, ” and ”…her music is vibrant, colorful and full of life. Skilled at the art of blending chords and note progressions into beautiful aural tapestries, her music is at once a welcome retreat from the mundane and ordinary. Her emotions come through her music…and through her music, she is able to reach out and touch the hearts of millions of appreciative piano music fans.” Christine’s music can be heard worldwide, featured on Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, Amazon, and most internet and cable/satellite stations. SHEET MUSIC available on her website.

From MainlyPiano
Like it’s predecessor, "A Classic Christmas II" is a collection of solo piano medleys of Christmas carols and classical pieces cleverly, creatively and enchantingly arranged by Christine Brown, one of my favorite artists for many years. The eleven tracks include one new original piece. Some of the classical composers “seamlessly” woven into the carols include Debussy, Chopin, Beethoven, Grieg and a few folk tunes. Always elegant and graceful, this is music for the quieter moments of the holiday season, or if you are someone who gets caught up in the frantic energy of Christmas shopping and holiday preparations, this music will help you de-stress. A companion sheet music book is also available and is a joy to play!

"A Classic Christmas II" begins with a haunting medley of “Sing We Now of Christmas” and “Carol of the Bells.” Magical and mysterious with a subtle but compelling energy, I love this combination! Over the past decade or so, there has been a tendency to slow “Jingle Bells” down, and I often dislike those arrangements, but I really like Christine’s, which is coupled with “Over the River and Through the Woods” and little bits from Grieg’s “Morning Mood” - warm, dreamy and very beautiful! One of the more surprising combinations is “O Come Emmanuel” and Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” and it works seamlessly - also a favorite. “Adeste Fideles / Deck the Halls” begins and ends with a snippet of one of Chopin’s shorter preludes (the one in A major, only this time it’s in C). “Midnight in Bethlehem” is a peaceful pairing of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.” “Joy to the World” works beautifully with Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” plus a surprise appearance by “Frere Jacques” in a few places. Light and carefree, I really love this one, too! “Coming Home” is the tender and nostalgic original composition - a poignant and heartfelt beauty! “Hear the Angels Sing” gracefully combines “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” and “Angels We Have Heard On High” - gently flowing and very expressive. “Holiday Medley” is livelier and more dancelike with “Good Christian Men Rejoice,” “Good King Wenceslas,” and “I Saw Three Ships” - joyful and delightful! I would be hard-pressed to find a more relaxing, soothing lullaby than “Silent Night” paired with “Rockabye Baby” - an elegant update of two memorable classics! Appropriately, Christine closes the album with “Auld Lang Syne,” but she mixes it with “Amazing Grace” for a sweet medley that ends with a sigh.

I’m a big fan of Christine Brown’s “seamless mashups” and "A Classic Christmas II" is no exception. It will be a wonderful addition to anyone’s Christmas music collection and is certain to brighten the holiday season (and beyond) for many years to come!
