No Less Satisfying
A more aggressive and raw work from the bluesy Canadian
Songbird than "Rain Down" but no less satisfying.
Lucky us I would say!!

Christina Donovan has a powerful voice reminiscent of early rockers like Wanda Jackson and Brenda Lee, but her choice of music is eclectic and sometimes surprising. All of the songs here rock, but some seem a bit lightweight and could use a denser mix of instruments, especially in the rhythm section. Even so, this strong selection of songs provides an excellent showcase for this Canadian singer's talents. "Black Hole" is an exceptionally strong piece, dark and heavy with a near-metal feel of pending... something. An excellent choice to close this set, "Black Hole" may be a good indicator of one direction this artist could take her music. Although not as dark thematically or musically, "Rain Down On Me" has much of the same feel and is one of the stronger songs on this release. I was especially taken by "When" with its mournful, nostalgic vocal and sweet melody. So reminiscent of slow Fifties rockers that it sounds like a remake, this is perhaps the strongest song on this release. Christine Donovan is definitely a talent to watch.

Chris Donovan's Lucky Me is absolutely stunning. Christine has one of the most amazing voices I've heard in recent memory. Fans of Janis Joplin and Heart are likely going to be particularly smitten with Christine's unique brand of rock n roll.

From the full throttle rock and roll of the opener "Lucky Me" to the humble closer "Dreams" Christine's debut flat out rocks. "Dreams" contains the lyric "I've got nothing but dreams in my pockets" ...now that's the life of a struggling musician summed up to a tee. Donovan's band throws down big time on the album kicking Christine's tunes into overdrive. Don Masters solos are melodic and well thought out. Ron Prunsters drumming and Doug Vallier's bass playing are nothing to shake a stick at neither. This is one band that payed close attention to their tone ....Don especially.

Christine and her band once again prove their versatility on the record shifting from chugging rockers like "Black Hole" to the reggae rock of "Sorry Momma" to the Holly McNarland-esque "Rain Down On Me". I mentioned that fans of Janis Joplin and Heart would enjoy Christine's music... but given her and her band's versatility I think just about anybody could find something they like in Chris Donovan's music. I think it's pretty much impossible to deny the power of Christine's voice and songwriting skills. Whether you are a fan of Evanescence or The Tea Party Christine Donovan has plenty for you to enjoy. Pick this one up.

christine donovan has created an outstanding work.
lucky girl for a lucky world

have you heard christine donovan's creation "lucky me"? if you haven't you are missing out. after years of reviewing demo tapes, even vynl oferrings, and just about anything imaginable, awhile ago i had the privilege of reviewing chris's self produced project.

i should think that review would be an understatement, as it became almost an addiction. i don't think i have listened to any one collection of music so intently or studiously since the beatles, david clayton thomas, and others who are considered legends. lucky me is a serious effort that encompasses good solid lyrics, great melodies, that morph into moving ballads with a tinge of reggae and country and in the case of title track (lucky me), a straight ahead rocker with good lyrics, and driving rhythms.

chrisine has a sterling voice, and an intrinsic ability to cross over all boarders and styles. the music is captivating, motivating and emotional, the more you listen the more you will appreciate it.
