ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Dr. Christine Jobson, soprano, presents these carefully selected African American art songs by Florence Beatrice Price. Florence Price (1887-1953) was the first black woman to have one of her compositions played by a major American orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, in 1933. She was an active member of the Chicago Music Association and the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM). A professor, pianist, organist, and composer, she remains a symbol of musical excellence and tenacity against difficult odds. The art songs included in this project were amongst those found in Ms. Price’s abandoned summer home near St. Anne, Illinois. Musical manuscripts and other important documents belonging to Ms. Price were saved from destruction when a young couple named Vicki and Darrell Gatwood found the items and gave them to the University of Arkansas Special Collections in 2009. Although these songs were nearly lost in that dilapidated home, they are far from being nearly lost today!
