Album Notes
"The Long Way Around" started as a trip down memory lane for life-long friends and musical partners Christopher Burgan and David Olivas. Together, with Christopher’s wife, Jennifer, the three began sorting through old boxes of hard drives and cassette tapes filled with demos dating back to when the boys were just that, boys. What they found was song after song of great ideas and nearly complete recordings that were never fully realized. Some of the demos they discovered went on to fill other projects. Bands like Adelphos, 541 Baseline, The Tannins, and even some of Christopher’s solo releases were all documented on the well-worn analog tapes. That experience alone would have made the journey worth the effort for the three. However, what they did not expect was to find a virtual treasure chest of amazing songs that somehow never really a fit into those other completed packages. One track in particular, “Faded Chair,” was written and recorded live, direct to two track, as a tribute the week that the still largely unknown artist Jeff Buckley tragically drowned in 1997. It had been sitting, as is, already complete but never released. So, on that day the decision was made to continue the process of honoring those tracks in the way that they should have been completed all those years ago.

To undergo the task, the songs that inspired the project were recorded from scratch, just as they were originally envisioned, while continuing to write new material that complimented those already existing convictions. “People” opens up with a battle cry of perseverance and the angelic promise of good things to come. The courage that follows leads into “I Am Going To Be.” No apologies need be made. We strive for excellence and live our lives the best we can without fear of failure. In doing so the victory has already been won. “Gathering Stones” reflects on the hurts we all experience that potentially prevent us from getting to this place, a place where we freely race into the wind with arms stretched out like Superman in the belief that we can fly. “Haunted Hallway” honors our ancestors who continue to lead us in those times of trouble and doubt years after they have passed. That reflection seamlessly transitions into “Faded Chair.” It achingly addresses that moment at the end of life when we are profoundly aware. It is assuring. Although we might be scared, we can find confidence that when our time finally comes, we will no longer need.

What we find now is a cohesive audio experience of encouragements. Although reflective, it is also firmly present as a set of recordings that you will want to revisit time and time again.
