Smoke and Origination

by Christopher

Mixing the avant garde, world music and metal, Christopher's "Smoke and Origination" documents urban sprawl and the cannibalistic homogenization of western life. One of the most innovative records in the past few years.

Album Notes
Hailing from Toronto Canada, Christopher, who found most conventions and current musical climates quite disagreeable, is a 3rd generation student drop out of Bela Bartok. Originally a classically trained guitarist, Christopher transmuted into a multi-ethnic dual gender vocal firestorm and fringe composer. The first incarnation was the 2001 release "wer Next Projekt" which according to writer Garry Sharpe-Young was "A truly remarkable piece of work."

According to, "'wer Next Projekt' is a genre-defying album released in 2001. It includes a mix of exotica, classical, metal, and electronica. `This record is impossible to describe' (was) often associated with this release. The contents of `wer Next Projekt' ended up being licensed heavily to independent films, interpretive choreographers, and other media artists due to it's unique sound and adaptive characteristics to visual media."

Fast forward 5 years of relocating, reinventing, whimsical auditions for Finnish metal bands, studio fires and floods, "Smoke and Origination" is released; a 68 minute opus that shares some of the same discordant ambitions Brian Wilson laid down in "Pet Sounds" back in the 60's. Unlike the sunny disposition of Brian Wilson's opus, "Smoke and Origination" documents urban sprawl and the cannibalistic homogenization of western life.

The fact the album is in one key is possibly a metaphor for the horrific redundancy of new development, corporate borne communities, and how these environs decimate the psyche; rendering it unable to properly articulate, emote, leaving the protagonist a frustrated immature consumer. The environment is never directly assaulted in the album, in favour of documenting situations and emotions that happen to exist within that environment.

Instead of channeling the usual spiritual calm that westerners perceive in world music, Christopher amplifies the dark, jarring aspects of the music from Arabia to Africa; a raw cabal of bloody nerves flailing against a beaten back. While the west searches elsewhere for consumable peace, Christopher's re-invention of world beat serves to remind that they will never find peace; no matter how sweet Starbucks makes the flavour.

Despite Christopher's contempt for retro chic, each composition on `Smoke and Origination' is built around motifs JS Bach composed centuries before. Examples of this include the mangling of Bach's "Air" motif in the vignette "Purpose?." As for the use of Bach's work, not even Christopher knows. "I attribute that to a higher meddling power of sorts."

What is apparent throughout the record is a vicious reconstruction of pop/rock formulas; using approaches found in the avant garde and often reviled progressive rock and metal subgenres. Christopher's unaffected 'au naturale' gender bending vocals glues all the seemingly disjointed pieces together to create an innovative concept record we here at Ikonowerk believe defies any comparison.

It is a enchanting journey from beginning to end.
'Smoke & Origination' will not be received by ALL fans of 'Wer Next Projekt' looking for a revised version of his first widespread release. It has the raw emotional feel of 'Orchid' his rare, first self-released 'Demo' of sorts. When looking back at the first track on 'Wer Next Projekt', 'Nokturne', the seventeen-minute introduction to this phenomenal Canadian artist Christopher, actually pales in comparison to the first track of 'Smoke & Origination' titled "The Summoning Vector" Although not 17 minute epic; Clocking in at a mere 1 Minute, 26 seconds, it assaults your senses; then lulls you into Track 2 "This is Your Plague'. The opening of TIYP, is reminiscent of the beautiful ethnic chants and enchanting tribal drums found on 'Wer Next Projekt' it is the perfect beginning in what is in itself an epic album. The 1 Hour, 8 minute album flows in such a way, it engulfs you in it's embrace. The lyrics are succinct, yet enticing. It is a enchanting journey from beginning to end.

Deviating from 'Wer Next Projekt', where only three of the songs contain Lyrics ('Wakeuplove', 'Fall into It' & 'You're So Sexual'). 'Smoke & Origination' offers a cornucopia of powerful lyrics which invoke an array of emotions in the listener. Although equally hard to classify, 'Smoke & Origination' is a new level of aural brutal beauty. From the Surreal Vocals, Dynamic drums, Gorgeous dulcimer compositions, haunting choral work and the stunning Classical Guitar & Cello piece 'Purpose?' you are slipped into a stranglehold which carries you on to 'Derivative Hearts' and 'Again' Leaving you breathless and awaiting more. It encompasses a pulchritude which I have yet to find in any new release.

In 2001, I thought that the complexity of 'Wer Next Projekt' could not be topped. After hearing 'Smoke & Origination' I have found that this artist was only giving us a brief glimpse of what lies inside his complex mind. I am looking forward to more......

Smoke and Origination-Unique and Groundbreaking
Christophers new release Smoke and Origination reminds me of why I waited so long and so impatiently for the talented artist to put out new work. Christopher is able to take us on a personal journey of sensitive and yet powerful attrition, sometimes a bit tempermental, and all of the time a pure joy to the ears and mind.
Congratulations, Christopher, the wait was worth it.

I'll not go into a lengthy review, words like enjoyable, talented and awesome should sum it up. I've shared this music experience with friends, we all agree, we need more of this fabulous artist.

Christopher’s music is oozing with personality, as one would expect after hearin
Christopher’s music is oozing with personality, as one would expect after hearing the strains of his previous release, “wer Next Projekt”. There’s a deliberateness to the progression of these songs and Christopher proves that aggression can come in full strength without resorting to gratuitous speed or crushingly hammered music. Now, make no mistake. Christopher’s music is lush, full-bodied and carries plenty of weight, but his industrial flavors pack all the angry emotion, angst and aggression into music that doesn’t require abrasiveness or pummeling tempos. These songs are distinct, unique and original but also accessible to fans of electronica and industrial. Christopher has crafted a fusion of gorgeous electronica soundscaping, mid- and downtempo beats and assertive, lyrcal poetry that is a fine example of how to break away from the same ol’ again rut of the electronic industrial scene.

"Smoke and Origination" in almost 70 minutes brings the whole palette of emotion
First time I get in touch with Christopher's music around a year ago when I was listening to a music files on his profile on myspace and it was immediately clear to me that here we talk about something rally special. "wer Next Projekt" and later "Abandoned In Situ" proved my first conclusion. Now I have a new album "Smoke and Origination" in front of me, album waited for five years.
"Smoke and Origination" in almost 70 minutes brings the whole palette of emotions and music elements that putted together creates one completely new dimension of music beauty which can be called only Christopher.
Album is opening by "The Summoning Vector", instrumental piece followed by the song "This Is Your Plague" which, with the dynamic musical turns after the chorus leads the listeners directly into the centre of their personal emotional whirlpool. With the next song, "Sunday Is Falling Apart", the sail through the dark waters of personal thoughts continues and ends with the last, 12th, song "Again". One of my personal favorites is "Spaghetti Terrorist", one of the most remarkable songs on the album which will, with its transatical mood and music theme in four parts surly get a lot of attention.
"Smoke and Origination" is the album which, despite of wide specter of music influences with clear accent on combination of ethno elements of Middle East and world production with properly dose of dark expression close to Dead Can Dance won't be delightedly accepted from all fans of "wer Next Projekt". But no matter to that this album is, with dynamic drums, glorious choruses and with combination of classic and modern one of the best works on world's music market generally. Christopher’s music is strong, complete, and deep and drowned into emotions. Anger, fear, aggression, gentleness, love all that and much more rising from every single note.
"Sharp Knives", "Purpose?" the song with cello part that wouldn't be shame even for world's famous Apocalyptica, "The Derivative Hearts" with its industrial beats and calm vocals and "Again" which closing the circle are songs that takes the breath away without any compromises.
Christopher is with the album "Smoke and Origination" opened the doors into complexity of his own thoughts and emotions. He came closer, a bit more then on "wer Next Projekt", to the mainstream production but in the same time he safely walks on the alternative ground. with this album he is ruffled calm waters of industrial but also rock scene.
Don't miss this album!
