Album Notes
"Dharma Rain" is the fourth allbum by Chronotope Project and the first issued under the artist's own "Udana Music" label ("Udana" is a Sanskit word meaning "inspired utterances").

The three-track album continues and extends the style cultivated in previous releases, layering scintillating electronic sequences, lush atomospheric pads, gently percolating percussion and long lyrical melodic lines into an integral whole. The themes of all three tracks marry seminal concepts in physics, cosmology and spirituality.

“Dancing Wu Li Masters” pays homage to Gary Zukav's book of the same name. “Wu Li” is the Chinese term for physics, which may also be translated as “patterns of organic energy.” The track features the composer's signature sound of the Haken Continuum Fingerboard, a uniquely expressive electronic instrument that traces melodic calligraphy over a sparkling canvas of pure effervescent energy.

“Oort Cloud” references the massive, slowly revolving gaseous cloud that surrounds our solar system, a cosmic mist that envelopes our star and its satellites. The Oort cloud is a phenomenon reminiscent of the medieval mystic's “Cloud of Unknowing,” since it is not only ubiquitous, but cannot be directly observed. The piece emerges from its initial vaprous texture into an ever-turning sphere of sound. This evolves gradually into a rhythmically driven harmonic progression that finally dissipates back into the invisible dust from which it was born.

The title track, “Dharma Rain,” refers to a phrase often heard in Buddhist sutras. Zen teacher Sheng Yen explains it in this way: "Rain is vital for plants, which can't survive without water. All sentient beings suffer from spiritual thirst and yearn for the soothing nectar of the Dharma rain." The composition, full of flowing, watery inflections, is offered as a sonic reflection of this essential spiritual image. It's primary theme is given two statements, the second of which is set with subtly weaving counterpoint over an increasingly percussive texture. “Dharma Rain,” above all, is a song of gratitude for the shower of widsom of great teachers and ancestors that rains down freely and equally on us all.

The album's three part construction also mirrors the great Buddhist Triple Treasure of Buddha, Dharma and Sanga. It is a view that honors the intimacy of teachers, truth and human relationships. It is also an acknowledgement that we are all integrally connected at every level, from macrocosm to microcosm.

Jeffrey Ericson Allen (Chronotope Project) is an Oregonian composer, cellist and electronic music recording artist. He has an extensive and eclectic background in classical, new acoustic and theatrical music production. His sensuous ambient music has been featured on distinguished and nationally-syndicated radio programs including "Hearts of Space," "Echoes," "Galactic Travels", " Musical Starstreams," "Ultima Thule" and "Star's End." Chronotope Project represents his most recent expression as a creator of contemporary progressive ambient music. "Chronotope" refers to the essential unity of space and time, a concept with numerous expressions in literature, physics and the arts. The music of Chronotope Project explores this time-space confluence and invites the listener on ambient journeys of deep texture infused with gentle pulsing rhythms and soulful melodies.
