Album Notes

This album is meant to involve the acoustic guitar played with the flatpicking technique in special sound environments, rewriting and reinterpreting popular pieces from the blues roots, the bluegrass, the folk, the ragtime and the jazz music. In my opinion, these pieces are the very ground of a music culture that helped me develop my sensibility as a guitarist.

Thanks to my “dream guitar” 1934 D MAHOGANY SANTA CRUZ I have thereafter paid homage to albums and music artists like Doc Watson, Scott Joplin, David Grier, Massimo Varini, Thelonius Monk, Jimmie Davis, Walter Vison and John Smith Hurt.

I divided the workload in the recording studio in three sessions with other different artists. The album was laid down in one continuous session, each song in a single take. The wonderful video tape by Alessio Zanardi and Stefano Resciniti, the flawless audio work by Cristian Codenotti and the supervision by Stefano Castagna in the Ritmo&Blu studio, a famous and trustworthy recording studio situated on the hills around Garda Lake, accompanied the recordings.

I thank all the artists that contributed to this second acoustic work and I wish them all to enjoy, as much as I do, the wonders of the flatpicking art and of the acoustic sound. These still give me the force and the motivation to go on writing new pages full of notes and many other projects.

Into the wild session.

“Beaumont Rag” (traditional)

This is a traditional “fiddle tune” piece made famous by numerous flatpicker from the country and bluegrass music. Personally, I would like to remind you of the versions by Doc Watson, Brian Sutton and Hank Thompson.

I arranged this piece in a new way weaving together the sounds of my acoustic guitar and the electric double bass played by Enrico “Larry” Mancini. I am really satisfied with the result, which was sincerely appreciated also by my personal “Guitar Hero” Maestro Beppe Gambetta.

“Wheeling” (David Grier)

David Grier – an American musician, guitarist and composer – is the greatest solo flatpicker that I have ever had the luck to listen to and to get to know. He created this wonderful bluegrass piece, thanks to his unique technique and to his musical phantasy. “Wheeling” was published in “Freewheeling”, a 1988 album. I deeply suggest to explore David Grier world on www.davidgrier.com.
With this version I tried to give homage to Mr. Grier through much perseverance and honesty. It is arranged four-handed together with Larry Mancini.

“Maple Leaf Rag” (Scott Joplin)

Mr. Joplin was one of the greatest ragtime composer and pianist. Thanks to a version by the amazing flatpicker Maestro Steve Kaufman I attempted the rearrangement of the piece for a flatpicking guitar, at the same time remaining faithful to the original harmonic structure.

The participation of Larry Mancini with his electric double bass made this version a real “piano roll” of the ragtime time. It is possible to get in touch with Steve Kaufman on www.flatpick.com.

“Sitting On The Top Of The World” (Walter Vinson)

This is an old piece from the 30’s, which became a classic in the folk music environment.
Taking inspiration from the Doc Watson version, I combined my “Carter Style” guitar version with the accompaniment by Pier Brigo with his electric double bass and Matteo Breoni with his percussion.

“Sliding Delta” (John Smith Hurt)

This is a piece by John Hurt usually known as “Mississippi John Hurt the blues-man”. Apart from the original version of this piece, I’d like to remember the version by Doc Watson from the “Down South” album, published in 1984.
My version is made gracious and funny thanks to the contribution of Pier Brigo’s double bass and Matteo Breoni’s percussion.

“Blue Monk” (Thelonius Monk)

This is a classic piece, signed by the jazziest Thelonius Monk, who I have appreciated since I was a child. The piece was included in the project exclusively with the aim to pay homage to this wonderful musician. I recorded “Blue Monk” with Matteo Breoni playing the percussion, Pier Brigo playing the double bass and giving the acoustic guitar a solo flatpicking style.

“Chesapeake Bay” (Massimo Varini)

This piece by the Italian Maestro Massimo Varini is one of the first that I studied from his repertoire. The song is contained in the “My Slides” album from 2009. For what concerns the guitar parts, I tried to maintain the piece as similar to the original as possible. We only added some color with the help of Massimo Pizzano playing the cajón and Matteo Valicella playing the double bass.

Thanks to Massimo Varini and to his passion for the guitar. For those who would like to follow this tremendous artist of the six strings, click on: www.massimovarini.it

“Corrine Corrina” (traditional)

This tune was born in the blues world, yet it became a classic piece since it has been rearranged and presented in many other genres. I want to remind you of the versions by Bo Carter, Big Joe Turner and Blind Lemon Jefferson. I created my version together with Massimo Pizzano playing the drums and Matteo Valicella playing the electric double bass.

“You are my sunshine” (Jimmie Davis)

This is a typical country piece, which became a classic through bluegrass, folk and pop rearrangements. I chose to respect its country spirit giving it some more colors through some flatpicking guitar parts.

Into the Wild Session

„Beaumont Rag“ (Traditional)

"Maple Leaf Rag" (Scott Joplin)

"Sitting On The Top Of The World" (Walter Vinson)

"Sliding Delta" (John Smith Hurt)

"Blue Monk" (Thelonius Monk)

"Chesapeake Bay" (Massimo Varini)

"You Are My Sunshine" (Jimmie Davis)

Jimmie Davis ,Walter Vinson, John Smith Hurt .

chesapeake bay ( Massimo Varini )
