Album Notes
"This isn't your fancy-schmancy Cirque du Soleil cabaret circus of pretentious mimes doing interpretive dance with zebras, this is in your face, hairy carnival barker, sledgehammer test of strength out front circus, the zany escapism that begat the idea of circus is present and under the spotlight in the center ring on Cirkestra."

-C.D. Di Guardia, Performer Magazine

"It has been many decades since American circus has recognized the importance of it's live music. In this recording, Peter Bufano and Cirkestra breathe life into one of our country's most important folk art traditions.

Peter Bufano has lived in many worlds. He is a clown, a musician, a juggler, a composer, and at times all four. He has traveled the musical world of India, clowned in Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, made contributions to both Hollywood movies and Times Square variety shows. His music reflects it's heritage from the voice of the penniless traveler, Roma, gypsy, nomad, to the driving sounds of American pop culture. It rides a delicate balance between slapstick and sentiment, lyricism and angular whimsy.

It's a refreshing experience to have circus music that neither imitates the ethereal audio wanderings of so many present day shows, nor accepts the vanilla pop standards of contemporary sounds. As the band plays on, I encourage you to close your eyes, smell the popcorn, and picture the tent, the circus ring, the aerialist, the clown, the juggler, and the ringmaster all presenting the grandest spectacle."

terrific but shore, more of the whimsical would be nice
Delightful, dancelike, evocative. If I did not know it was highly original circus music, I'd have said it is highly original world music, whose influences include eastern European folk tradition and nineteenth century French classical music. I liked the melodic violin numbers best, and would have liked to here more of that. However I also enjoyed Peter Bufano's playful and energetic accordion, which comprised most of the album. My only real gripe is that the album is too short (approx. 27 minutes) for the price...

Performance Disc Seeks Out Performers!
Typically, a shortcoming for any "soundtrack" or show related disc is that it is closely associated with the performance that it was written for. Not the case with Peter Bufano's "Cirkestra!"

The music here indicates and inspires movement, fun and action. Just try to NOT get up and walk around on five foot stilts, ride down the street on a giraffe unicycle or have a pie fight with a friend to this disc!

The sound of the tracks are full, lush and evocative of both a circus and a cabaret! There are tunes that call to mind the sound of Spike Jones and Charlie Chaplin, but also of Kurt Weill... so, it's quite an eclectic mix!

For a unique listening experience that goes as well with Sunday Brunch as it does with Friday Night, you should give "Cirkestra" a try!

The best circus music you'll ever hear
I was on tour with Peter Bufano. Hence, I listened to Cirkestra for four hours a day. I still enjoy this compact disc enormously and you will too. This is circus music for the new generation of circus.
