Album Notes
I grew up in the Peruvian rainforest, in my mother’s home town, Moyobamba. There was only one doctor in the whole town and therefore most people relied on natural medicines to cure their ailments. For more serious problems there were the curanderos or shamans. If you suffered from mal de ojo, melancholia, or were just going through a bad period in your life, you would turn to the magic of Ayahuasca.
Ayahuasca is a part of the mystery of the Peruvian rainforest, indigenous to its landscapes, traditions, stories and its peoples. It is a hallucinogenic vine that has been used for thousands of years within the indigenous communities of the South American rainforests in rituals and as a powerful medicine. It presents you with visions and possibilities. More recently it has been used to treat addiction, anxiety and depression. I participated in an Ayahuasca ceremony almost 30 years ago and I credit it in part to helping open up a creative path, transcendent in my development as a musician.
The album was made over a span of many years. It started with the piece “Silencio” which I wrote right after 9/11, as a tribute to the families who lost loved ones in the World Trade Tower explosions. The creation of the album took me through many turns and winding roads. It was a learning, transformative experience, similar to my Ayahuasca journey. I met many musicians along the way and this album reflects those wonderful collaborations, an example of my Ayahuasca dream fulfilled.

The RajMan Review
Peruvian guitarist Ciro Hurtado breaks from his usual mold and brings it on this engagingly vibrant world music album.

Based primarily on South American rhythms and sounds, the CD is a full and rich cornucopia of Latin-flavored jazz, pop, rock and fusion, with Hurtado leading the way on nylon- and steel-string acoustic guitars and electric guitars.

Hurtado proves to be a consummate bandleader, hosting not only his wife on sprightly vocals, but also a top-notch group of musicians on flute, violin, keyboards, bass, drums, and percussion.

This is a fine guitar album that deserves a place in any guitar enthusiast's collection.

Music Makes Life Sweeter
Ayahuasca Dreams begins with Peru, an upbeat compilation of guitar, Andean flute, and drums. At some point it almost sounds like rock music, then gives way to the Peruvian sounds of the background band. Too Young too Soon and Physician Poet are a tribute to the prominent Public Health physician Antoinette Yancey, who lost her life to cancer at an early age. Toni, as she was known to her friends, wrote poetry in her spare time and Ciro’s guitar accompanied her stanzas. Toni was an advocate for exercise, as a way to stimulate the mind as well as the body. Her passing away at an early age was a great loss to the Los Angeles County Public Health community. This album really proves that music can make life much sweeter, as we wash away our sorrow and pain with the soothing tunes and comforting lyrics. Feliz is a happy track that comes midway in the album to keep the momentum going. This album is a lovely addition to any music collection.

Lyrics and Vocals
This album keeps on giving as the more I listen to it, the more I discover new aspects. The angelic voice of Cindy Harding shows a range of high and low notes, mixed with overtones from husband Ciro Hurtado. Ciro chords strike a balance between the drums, flute, and santoor. The violin is a reminder of classical masters, and keeps the rythm in check for Cindy's incredible voice. The lyrics are fantastic, and give the listener time to absorb their meaning and to bring new thoughts to the mind and soul.

Ciro Hurtado is simply an astounding musician. His most recent album is AYAHUASCA DREAMS. He is known primarily as a Latin acoustic guitarist originally from Peru, but on this ensemble recording he also shows he is a very melodic composer, artistic arranger and astute producer. He brings in female singers, wood flute players, a pianist, a couple of musicians from India, a violinist, an organist and percussionists. Hurtado stretches out by not only playing his regular Latin nylon-string guitar, but also some steel-string guitar and electric guitar. Overall the album has a gentle Latin sound, mostly mid-tempo and acoustic. The bottom-line is that Hurtado creates an absolutely lovely, light-caress sound. This music will simply make you feel good.
