Album Notes
Don Heckman in an earlier review in the L.A. Times of the Clare Fischer Clarinet Choir wrote:

“Clarinet players would have a hard time finding a better friend than Clare Fischer. At a time when the instrument – except in classical music settings – is largely relegated to secondary status, the veteran composer arranger is now providing it with an extraordinary showcase in the ensemble he calls his Clarinet Choir.
“Like Mozart, whose Clarinet Concerto and Clarinet Quintet established the instrument’s primary aural template, Fischer realizes that the clarinet, with its three-octave-plus range, has at least three distinctly useful tonal registers. By exploiting the different qualities of those areas, enhancing his color palette by also including E-flat alto clarinet, B-flat bass clarinet and E-flat contrabass clarinet, his charts shimmered with a gorgeous range of multihued sounds.”

Here then is Clare Fischer’s latest recording of his clarinet choir with the added colors of additional woodwinds, brass and rhythm.
The title of the album, “A Family Affair” was chosen because of the writers involved. Although there are 6 original Clare Fischer compositions, there are also three that were written by his son, Brent Fischer, and one that was written especially for this album by his brother, Dirk Fischer.
As stated in the liner notes, they had an extraordinary time putting this collection together, and hope you will sense the joy and satisfaction they felt doing it.

Another great clarinet masterpiece from Clare Fischer
Those who enjoyed Clare's "On a Turquoise Cloud" will delight in this one also. Clare has an incredible affinity and respect for the timbres and shades of the clarinet family and has a place for all the lesser played members of the clarinet family. "A Family Affair" continues the scope and breadth of Clare's clarinet visions. Under the direction of son Brent Fischer, they have again brought together the fine group of dedicated collaborators and their various clarinets and other instruments to put together another masterpiece of mainly Fischer originals (by Clare, brother Dirk and Brent), and some thoughtful reworkings of jazz standards like Giuffre's Four Brothers and Mulligan's Jeru. There are fine solos from Clare and his erstwhile reedmen companions Gary Foster and Don Shelton, and from brassmen Steve Huffsteter and Les Benedict. This album is a treat for all who love the clarinet or the music of Clare Fischer or both. Don't miss this one.
