ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Legendary Boston writer Joe Coughlin has THIS to say
about garage punks' Classic Ruins, and their CD
LASSIE EATS CHICKENS
"
From sessions in the mid-80s (when they were already seven years along) comes this unspoiled lump of fun and (yep) history. Unadorned guitars, three-minute, verse/ chorus/ solo/ repeat variants (ah, the good old days), but with the secret weapons of Frank Rowes dirty hooks and funny lyrics. Why argue with You will obey all my commands/ and stimulate my endocrine glands, served on a bed of warm thunk, sung by a guy who sounds like he gargles with Old Thompson? Rowes voice is like sand pudding, but the bands overall tack is equally sweet-meets-gritty. I Cant Spell Romance is as great as its title. Roman Fingers is timeless instro. Labatts and Roccos Wake are forever hard-wired into the remaining brain cells of us who were there (and are just waiting for new victims to infect). More than worth it for the nine original-release tracks alone, but most of the added comp tracks and outtakes work fine too, if not quite essential. (One number sounds slightly wobbly, as if from tape stretch, but Im quibblin now.) Sadly, Rowes masterful Lullaby Of Boomland, THE coolest song about Boston music ever written, isnt here. (If you can find the Ruins Café LP, sell your mom to get it.) The good news is, theyre STILL at it, back as a four-piece, with boffo new material, and they sound better than ever. Why am I not surprised?"
