Cofresi

by Rafael Dávila, Elaine Ortíz-Arándes, Roselín Pabón & The Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra

The operetta Cofresí tells the love story between the pirate and his beloved, Amparo Amador, and how he swears to take revenge for the dishonor of her family at the hands of an officer of the Spanish Armed Forces. That passionate love story was framed by the sociopolitical conditions of Puerto Rico in the early 19th century. The extensive research required by this work points to the reality of Cofresí who, far from being a legendary character of questionable fame, turned out to be a leading figure concerned with the emancipation of his homeland. He became the voice that called on his people to rise up against the oppression of a corrupt, disorganized and decaying power. The Puerto Rican pirate heralded the winds of independence that stroked every Spanish colony in America.
