Album Notes
Colin Boland is a singer songwriter from Calgary that came into his own as a musician as a part of the traditional music community of Victoria BC. As the front man of a bluegrass and old time group; “The Stowaway Stringband”, he orchestrated the “Wind Powered Tour” where “The Stowaways” toured the west coast of BC for three years by sailboat playing at music festivals, private functions and pubs in the ports and anchorages along the way. He has now embarked on a solo project and released a CD of nine original tunes where he plays his guitar and banjo, and sings songs of the landscapes and people who have inspired him in his travels. This self-titled CD was recorded by Archie Pateman of “The Breakmen” in Cumberland BC.
Boland’s album is Country, Bluegrass, and Old Time with a salty grit from his days at sea.
Drawing from the plethora of talent in BC and Alberta, this new EP has the musicianship of many greats from Boland’s music community including Christopher Herbst from “The Moonshiners”, Jack Roland “The Cumberland Brothers”, Matthew Lawson “The Breakmen”, Banjo Pete Reid, Simon Kendall, Lee Watson, Erik Allen, and Archie Pateman. The CD was mastered by Corwin Fox.
After reading an article in the Fretboard Journal about John Hartford, Boland realized that along with his passion of music, he could also follow his passion of boats. John Hartford being a legendary musician and river boat captain on the Mississippi inspired Boland to go to sea for adventure. In the past few years he has gained his captains license and has skippered boats in BC and the Caribbean. He is now sailing classic boats in the Mediterranean and playing music in the ports and pubs. His dream of the “Wind Powered Tour” is going international.
From his first open-mic in Calgary at the Karma Café at the age of 16, Colin has performed on many stages, and played for many people around the world. His ability to remember lyrics and choose the right song for the moment is astounding. A bard, a captain, and a performer at heart, Boland’s songs are a fresh take on Country and Bluegrass while still being true to the tradition. This new record is a great selection of songs written during the past decade of his life.
