Album Notes
"...an artist who deserves to be heard well beyond his hometown."
- jazzreview.com

Saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Kyle Coughlin has been entertaining audiences on the East Coast for over twenty five years. A versatile musician who is proficient in jazz, classical, and popular styles, his own compositions blend straight-ahead jazz with elements of Latin rhythms, Impressionistic harmonies, 1960's go-go beats, and Irish jigs. This unique approach shines through in his critically acclaimed debut CD, When Afternoons Return (2001), as well as his recent release, In the Shadow of Palms (2002).

Coughlin's deep love of music extends back to his early childhood. However, he began his college studies in the school of business at the University of Maryland. After a year of idle scholastic meandering, he realized that his career path belonged in the world of music so he appropriately switched his major. He continued his music studies at the Peabody Conservatory where he earned both his Masters and Doctorate degrees in clarinet performance.

A native of Maryland, Coughlin has played at every major jazz venue in the Baltimore-Washington area, including Blues Alley, the King of France Tavern, the Baltimore-Washington Jazzfest, and the Kennedy Center. His musical journeys have led him far beyond his home state to concerts in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Jacksonville, Baton Rouge, Italy, and France.

Coughlin has created many educational websites and has written several books. He is on the faculty of Howard Community College where he directs the school's jazz department, leads the jazz ensemble and small groups, and teaches improvisation and music fundamentals.
