Album Notes
"Hailing from Oregon, Dawson Cowals is a strong, intense performer with well thought out music. Rhythmically intelligent, his pieces all reflect solid relationships between the melodic patterns and the background music. With a voice alternating between Natalie Merchant and Dave Matthews, there is a fearless sense to his vocals, and a level of commitment in his singing that is rare and quite a wonderful thing to hear. If you're into unique performers, solid music and lyrics with some substance to them, check out Dawson Cowals. Nice work from a fearless musician." - mp3reviews.com

If you are tired of the same old Christmas recordings that sound like the same songs repeated over and over by different people then you will enjoy this CD. Dawson has taken several classic carols and reworked them in his style to bring a more modern influence to their sound. Favorite classic remakes include "Away In Five" which layers the classic carol "Away In A Manger" on top of the rhythmic feel of Brubeck's masterpiece "Take Five", and the rocking retelling of "We Three Kings" with additional lyrics that comprises "We're Just Three Kings". In addition to the recognizable classics Dawson has added several original tracks to the CD ranging from the title track, "Born Is The King" with its pulsing drums and celtic flute to "When Jesus Was Born" with its Beattlesque sounds. If you enjoy the music of Dave Matthews, John Mayer or Bebo Norman then this CD will make a great new addition to your Christmas season collection.

The original version of this CD was released December 12, 2000 through MP3.com's Digital Automatic Music program, but after they closed their doors this re-release was made available on December 5, 2003. The end result, though, is a higher quality, digitally remastered recording with better artwork and packaging. The new artwork contains all of the lyrics and a copy of the Christmas story as told by the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. This re-release version also features the bonus acoustic version of "O Come, All Ye Faithful." The title track, "Born Is The King", has seen incredible success since its initial release back in December of 2000. Featuring Dawson on acoustic guitar, vocals and flute this song weaves the Christmas story from the time of Christ's birth through his death and resurrection. In its first month of release this song received more than 50,000 downloads on MP3.com, placing it #2 overall on their charts among more than a million other songs-ironically, just behind the recent Cynthia Basinet single "Santa Baby". Since then it has continued to be one of the favored tracks from this CD, and is a definite showcase of Dawson's diverse musical background and talents.

From new to old the songs on this CD all share one common thread and purpose, to celebrate in song the true joy of Christmas: "...it is the night of our dear savior's birth." May you be blessed by these songs as you celebrate the miracle of Christmas this year.

Merry Christmas! Mele Kalikimaka! Joyeux Noël!

Dawson has been writing music for over 15 years and has a total of 10 full-length CDs containing over 130 unique songs between them. Some of the more recent recordings include his modern Christmas collection featuring the smash-hit title track, "Born Is the King"; his full-length studio recording "Don't Look Back" with songs like "Green", "Seraph's Wings", and "Without You"; an all-acoustic collection of new and older favorites called "Unplugged" with songs such as "I'm Not That Strong" and "Sticks & Stones"; to the most recent live concert release, "Live at the Solid Rock Cafe 10.12.2001", with 17 songs for a play time of almost 80 minutes!

Besides writing and performing the songs on this CD, Dawson also did the graphic design work for the packaging. When he isn't busy singing he also does design work for many other artists from the Pacific Northwest to Australia. He has played in small coffee shop venues and for outdoor amphitheatre crowds of thousands, but wherever you hear him you will come away feeling that you had the chance to share an incredible evening of acoustic storytelling with a from-the-heart performer. Exciting breakout album: a bona fide, acoustic rock/folk pop gem
Finally! After listening to innumerable instrumental albums that added little to the holiday chestnuts we know so well, I suddenly encountered this exciting breakout album. What a find! Dawson Cowals' Born Is the King is a bona fide, acoustic rock/folk pop gem. This superbly talented singer-songwriter hails from the Northwest and has an emotive alternative rock voice à la Dave Matthews or perhaps John Mayer. His 14 tracks include five originals; of the remaining holiday classics, most have been entirely refashioned with innovative arrangements and additional lyrics that make even the staid "Silent Night" burst with brilliant rejuvenation. The helpful liner notes present every imaginative word for the listener's enjoyment.
Every song is fantastic--both Cowals' new numbers and his re-crafted classics. Born Is the King opens very well with Cowals' incredible a cappella "Intro" to the pounding, driven "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel/We Will Exalt You," which has the greatest back-up vocal (Karissa Nelson singing "shall come to thee, shall rescue thee"). The original "Born Is the King" begins like a lively Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson tune, Cowals' flute blazing. I was rockin' with his remodeled "Good King Wenceslas" every step of the way--what a joy! The artist cleverly rechristens "The Holly and the Ivy" as "Mr. Bah Humbug," asking the jaded Humbug to disclose how to convert crass commercialism to heartfelt authenticity on Christmas morn. The final track is also the longest on this generous album (over an hour of music!); it is an exquisitely performed acoustic version of "O Come All Ye Faithful."
Dawson Cowals' Born Is the King is the real deal! Those who favor alternative rock, acoustic rock, folk pop, or just plain excellent music will adore this intensely creative and well-crafted CD. The musicianship is outstanding. Bravo!

Captures both the partying aspects of the season and the awe-inspiring joy
Dawson Cowals is a Christian musician with one of the best Christmas albums I've ever heard. If you like Dave Matthews or Matchbox 20, you should give him a listen. Away In Five is "Away In The Manger" done to 5/4 time, and really kicks butt. We're Just Three Kings is a modern approach to "We Three Kings." Truly inspired! I'm just listening to the end as I type this up. Ooh! I'm gonna start it again! The hairs on my arms were standing straight up. This one'll give you chills! A very modern revisit of an old favorite. Man! Goosepimples!

I'm a big fan of both novelty Christmas music and the old standards. Cowals' music appeals to both my conventional tastes in holiday music and my less conventional tastes. He captures both the partying aspects of the season and the awe-inspiring joy of it. Room In This Inn has his signature all over it, and is a perfect final stroke to the Christmas collection, wrapping everything up in a nice red bow and placing it metaphorically on display under the tree. I highly recommend Dawson Cowals!
