ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Dan Cray formed Beyond Id with drummer Jacques Lambert and bassist John Hunt (Five Head), in the early 90’s. They went through several line up changes that included Rod Murphy of My Brother Zebulon fame, and Sean Kineally of Somerville PD fame.
What started out as a post punk throwback to The Velvet Underground, found inspiration in the discord of early Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, and Buffalo Tom’s Birdbrain.
Throw in Tom Waits love of the ballad and Randy Newman’s pre-Disney sarcasm, a dose of the Replacements debauchee honesty, and you’ve got Dan Cray.
To quote Jim Santo (www.demouniverse.com/), “He's a lyric surgeon, effortlessly excising our stinking viscera and laying them on the coffee table. And oh, the guitars! Majestic and jaundiced, they slither like pretty pink lizards and rise like cranes from a burning lake. Peter Gabriel trod these boards once upon a foxtrot. Now it's Cray's turn to take the stage. Here's your chance for a front-row seat. Don't miss out.”

A true undiscovered genious
You hear big words thrown around in reviews a lot of the time, but never has the term undiscovered genious been so deserved. Dan Cray is an amazing songwriter, a heartwrenching singer, and a masterful twister of tales.

You can never be sure if its funny or sad, which makes it real. Lyrics about life in the way that life feels for most of us. He directs his good natured if sarcastic 'observivness' in familiar directions, love, booze, hurt, and emptiness, but like greg brown or even maybe dylan, the harshest digs are just really a humorous recognition that fate and god are at play in every struggle, and just because we can't always overcome it all, doesn't mean we can't recognize the tragic beauty of life all around us.

and on top of that - the guitars say it as well as the words. The lowfi recordings only ad to the charm.

Discover the reclusive Cray NOW, or wait till a day when you will wish you could say that you did... either way these songs will find their way home to you.
