LINER NOTES:
Given that Croc Shop founder and driving force Mick Hale is a friend of long standing (dating back to his previous life as Mick London), as well as a former bandmate (in the conceptual Wire cover band, the Ex-Lion Tamers), I have avoided writing about the group through the years, lest my "objectivity" seem sacrificed. But the retrospective nature of CS.Sea begs for a reassessment of the band, and not only by this rock-roll Luddite: As the following 35 tracks amply illustrate,... Croc Shop has been an underground treasure for 17 years now (under many different guises, but driven primarily by Hale and his key co-conspirator v. Markus). Croc Shop have willfully carved out their own unyielding path through a twisted musical thicket that has seen them consume, conquer, and often reinvent elements of shoegazer rock, gothic ambient drone, crushing industrial noise, pulsating techno, pounding drum and bass, good ol'-fashioned disco sex groove music, and myriad other sounds, to arrive at something that is not only unique sonically (Hale's songs remain wonderfully melodic, soulful, and dare I say human - though I'm certain that's an adjective he'd disavow) and lyrically (far left of Ralph Nader, our hero's political views are needed now more than ever in these fascist times - and by the way, he'd like you to not eat meat), but ethically. That is to say that in these ever-more bought, sold, compromised, and commodified times, Croc Shop remains the rare group dedicated to its art, and careerism be damned. CS.Sea is a testament to just how potent that art has been, and hopefully will continue to be.

- Jim DeRogatis, pop music critic, The Chicago Sun-Times, and author: "Let It Blurt: Life and Times of Lester Bangs"; "Milk It (Musings On The Alternative Explosion)", and "Kalidescope Eyes" (Psychedellic Rock), Jim also appears on VH1 and does the "Sound Opinions" Radio & TV show(s) in Chicago.

very fine talent with new sounds each time
Hello from Belgium ! The Croc Shop men have put together a very interesting album for gothic and industrial heads all alike. With the including guitar songs for the "Lullabye" album with the Chamelons guitarer productions, the opening track are great to hear - with Joy Division punk goth sounds that turns into more Sisters of Mercy style then Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb get into the soundand genre too when the Corcs add electric sounds to the dance beat! Wow! ...this is great stuff here! Also there is many new synth=pop sounds in the end of the 2 hours of musical journeys on disc # 2!!! You have to hear this band if you never did before!

Nice packaging and well documented artifact of the band's progression. Being a fan of the raincoat rock, and guitar style of the Chameleons, I was drawn to track this band down early on due to the production credit of Dave Fielding. My only sigh of disappointment stems from early tracks appear being mastered from vinyl (but assume the tapes might be lost to time). For the price....a great introduction to this band!

An evolution of a band's sound is always intriguing to see.
From their Chameleons(U.K.)-esque origins to their present synth/EBM incarnation, this CD does an excellent job of capturing Crocodile Shop at various points in their career. All of their recorded output is represented here, and it would be an excellent starting point for new listeners.

More than the money's worth at $13.99 for this superb collection.
Croc Shop must today be given homage as one of the pioneers, veterans, and perhaps best-known names in the elektro-industrial music world... These discs truly present a powerful portrait of the evolution of Mick Hale and company in 35 tracks that resonate with continuous enthusiasm, with explosive forays into every industrial music permutation... ensuring that by the time you are done, you will not only know Croc Shop - you will understand why they are both the foundation and the future of elektro. This Croc Shop release is described as a "best of" Croc Shop, but truth is, it's the best of everything.

In some instances while listening, I could not help reminiscing about Sisters of Mercy (e.g. "Mother Russia") because of the eery and exciting resemblance in the vox on a few tracks on Disc One to that also legendary band SOM. But a bewildering array of stylistic charms was definitely on display, and whether intended or not, I felt even a touch of David Bowie, maybe Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cruxshadows, Covenant, and some darker down-in-the-boiler-room type tracks that were nearly scary, a bit GGFH-ish (think "Real"), especially with a good game of Halo going on the X-box. Sometimes there are even punky sounding aggressive work-outs that make these discs the "total package" - and one that should NOT be missed. Here is at once a retrospective and a celebration of our art as it now exists -- and as it will become.

The arrangement / ordering of the tracks is impressive. Someone was working to make these discs as listener-friendly as possible - and they certainly accomplished that. I have noted that one of the tracks on Disc 1 is as "psychogenically different as any track I've ever heard." I can't really explain that ;-) I also noted on an index card where I scribbled thoughts as the discs progressed that "Gray Day Reign" from Disc 1 was an absolute "classic". In sum, we couldn't quite believe the assembly of stand-out tracks that hit back-to-back on the laser lines of two incredible discs, really never missing a beat.

These fellows don't need hype, obviously, as good as they are, -- and they're not getting it. All of the above is true. Self-Extracting Archive is the most satisfying experience through 35 tracks that I have personally had in months and months of listening to virtually hundreds (no, really hundreds) of discs. Anyone who buys it after reading this will most definitely write and thank me for the heads-up. There are only 399 (at least originally) copies available that include a special cardboard overwrap and 12-page booklet that gives dialog from the guys about each track. Trust me, these are going to go fast! I knew Croc Shop was a great band; I just never realized how good they really are, diverse, multi-dimensional, fearless eclectics taking the best of different styles and merging them in the unique C/S sound…

Go and sin no more. Or do it well and shamelessly if you do. Either way, get SEA as soon as you can. It is an experience for the ears and the psyche that you will not soon forget.

Note: We know great industrial when we hear it…That's all we produce…. And BLC would be extremely proud to have had a hand in this release ;-) Props to Croc Shop for giving listeners much more than their money's worth at $13.99 for this superb collection.
