About Julee Cruise:

Born on 1 December 1956, Cruise studied French horn at Drake University and performed as a singer and actress in New York, where she also worked as a talent scout for Angelo Badalamenti. In 1985, Badalamenti was composing the score for David Lynch's Blue Velvet, as well as serving as the vocal coach for the film's star, Isabella Rossellini. A key scene in Blue Velvet was intended to feature "Song of the Siren" by This Mortal Coil, but when the rights to the song proved prohibitively expensive, it was suggested that Badalamenti compose a pop song in the same style, with lyrics written by Lynch. Because the song required a vocalist with a haunting, ethereal voice, Badalamenti recommended Julee Cruise, who had sung "like an angel" in a New York theater workshop that Badalamenti had produced. The result of their initial collaboration was "Mysteries of Love," which figures prominently in Blue Velvet's closing scenes.

Positive reaction to "Mysteries of Love" led Badalamenti and Lynch to write and produce additional songs for Cruise, most of which were featured in her debut album, Floating Into the Night . The album was released on 12 September 1989 by Warner Bros. Records, and charted on Billboard the following year. A moody, tightly structured collection of pop songs with lush, idiosyncratic orchestrations and intentionally retro lyrics, Floating Into the Night became a favorite of such musicians as Tim Booth , lead singer of the band James, and techno artist Moby, who would go on to collaborate with Cruise on the unreleased track "Drown Disco." It also provided musical material for two of Lynch's other projects. The first was Industrial Symphony No. 1, a dark, intentionally obscure performance piece in which Cruise performed while "floating" from a harness dozens of feet above a stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The second, more significant project was the soundtrack to Lynch's Twin Peaks, for which Badalamenti composed the original score. The song "Falling," which became the orchestral theme for the television series, caused a minor sensation, winning a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental, while the Twin Peaks soundtrack, featuring Cruise on the songs "Into the Night" and "The Nightingale" as well as on the vocal version of "Falling," eventually became the best-selling television soundtrack of all time. Cruise made a number of appearances on Twin Peaks as a girl singer at a local bar, and was prominently featured in the show's landmark pilot episode, as well as in 1992's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

The campy but unsettling "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart," the second single from Floating Into the Night, was released in 1990. Cruise also made a controversial appearance on Saturday Night Live on 12 May 1990, when scheduled performer Sinead O'Connor refused to appear on the same show as guest host Andrew Dice Clay. The following year, Cruise recorded a Lynch- and Badalamenti-produced cover of the Elvis Presley song "Summer Kisses, Winter Tears" for the soundtrack of Wim Wenders's Until the End of the World. Afterwards, Cruise maintained a relatively low profile until her second album, The Voice of Love , was released in 1993. To many listeners and reviewers, this album suffered in comparison to its predecessor, possibly due to the numerous other projects competing for Lynch and Badalamenti's attention. Many of the tracks were little more than instrumentals from Wild at Heart or Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me with added vocals. However, several songs, notably "Questions in a World of Blue," are ranked by fans among Cruise's best.

Cruise's early collaborations with Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch were closely related to Lynch's film work, and their lyrics often reflect this. For example, "Into the Night" begins with the whispered words "Now it's dark," a line which was repeatedly spoken by Frank Booth, Dennis Hopper's character, in Blue Velvet. Lynch also photographed Cruise for the liner notes of Floating Into the Night and The Voice of Love, and created the sculptures featured on the covers of both albums.

The following decade found Cruise lending her vocals to works by a more miscellaneous list of collaborators, mostly in techno and dance music. She provided vocals and lyrics to several of the songs on Wide Angle , the debut album by Welsh dance group Hybrid, notably the epic techno track "If I Survive." She also appeared on two albums by dance artist Khan . The lyrics for many of these songs, such as "Body Dump," reflect Cruise's own interest in true crime. Cruise also acted and sang in the Off Broadway cast of Return to the Forbidden Planet, a spoof of William Shakespeare's The Tempest, and toured with the B-52s in 1992 and 1993.

Cruise's long-delayed third album, The Art of Being a Girl , was released in 2002. This was the first of her albums for which Badalamenti and Lynch did not produce or write any of the music, with music and lyrics for each of the songs being written by Cruise herself, with the exception of an updated version of her classic single "Falling." The following year, Cruise's song "The World Spins" was featured in an extended ballet sequence in Robert Altman's The Company.
Cruise currently lives in Manhattan with her husband Edward Grinnan, the editor-in-chief of Guideposts Magazine.

Review of Julee's Art of Being a Girl:

"Julee Cruise is a chanteuse from the hereafter, spinning otherworldly tales in a silken spider's web of a voice." Boston Phoenix

First solo recording in seven years which was released on August 20, 2002

Water Music Records announced the August 20 release of Julee Cruise's new album "The Art of Being a Girl." A project that the former French horn player describes as"...Davenport music rather than couch music", The Art of Being a Girl wittingly mixes Mancini samples, electronic bossa nova grooves, and wistful melodies that fuse darkly under the spell of Julee's mesmerizing vocals. Musician and composer JJ McGeehan (X-Files, King of the Hill) co-wrote and co-produced the album. Guest producers include Mocean Man, Khan, Rick Strom and Kevin Tooley.
Since her unforgettable New York debut in David Lynch's infamous Industrial Symphony #1 at the BAM Next Wave Festival in 1989 where she performed in a prom dress while suspended eighty feet above the open house stage, Julee Cruise - singer, songwriter, actress and musician - has made her mark in a variety of mediums. Her credits include, of course, the groundbreaking tv series Twin Peaks, solo recordings and videos (Floating Into he Night, The Voice of Love), soundtracks (Scream, Until the End of the World, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks), home video (Industrial Symphony), films (Fire, Walk With Me), and theater (House of Blue Leaves, Return to the Forbidden Planet, Beehive). She has done numerous stints with the B-52s, filling in for lead singer Cindy Wilson, and has performed with Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra.

Julee is internationally acclaimed for her work in the dance world with artists such as Moby, Hybrid, Eric Kupper, DJ Dimitri, DJ Silver, Kan, Biftek and Moodswings. She appears on multiple compilations recently released in Europe and North America. Julee plans to tour the US and Europe this fall to support The Art of Being a Girl. She made her first-ever appearance at the Twin Peaks Convention in Seattle on August 16. Virgin Mega Store in Los Angeles hosted a special in-store performance on the release date august 20. Virgin Mega Store in New York City also hosted a special in-store performance on September 12. Julee recently performed two shows at Joe's Pub in New York City with a full band and special guests.

Cruise, Badalamenti and Lynch then recorded "Floating Into The Night" which charted on Billboard in 1990. The music was subsequently adapted for the ground-breaking television series Twin Peaks, in which Julee had a recurring role. The soundtrack went on to become the largest-selling TV soundtrack of its time. "Falling", the unforgettable Twin Peaks theme song, was also a hit for Julee. She followed up with an international concert tour, including a wildly successful debut at London's legendary Palladium, and a controversial musical guest appearance on Saturday NightLife (she stepped in when Sinead O'Connor refused to appear with host Andrew Dice Clay). Julee appeared in the movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and on the soundtrack, and sang the movie's theme song "Questions in a World Of Blue" under a full moon on a beach in the French Riviera for the film's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 1992. Badalamenti also featured her voice at the opening ceremonies of the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. "Voice of Love", Julee's second solo album, marked her writing debut with "In My Other World", co-written with Louis Tucci.

Along with U2, REM, k.d. lang and others, Julee's singing was heard in the Wim Wenders movie Until The End Of The World, doing a cover of the old Elvis tune "Summer Kisses, Winter Tears," which was subsequently used as the music behind a Kim Bassinger lingerie commercial. She also wrote and performed a song on the first Scream soundtrack.
Julee's stage credits include House Of Blue Leaves, A Little Night Music, Beehive, Little Shop Of Horrors, Cabaret, and Pump Boys and Dinettes. Fred Schneider saw Julee in the off-Broadway production of Return to the Forbidden Planet and recruited her as a replacement for lead singer Cindy Wilson who was taking a maternity leave. Julee has done several worldwide tours with the B-52s and gave a featured performance with the band at Bill Clinton's inauguration.
Moby has called Julee his 'favorite singer'. She has recorded and performed with him as well as with the British breakbeat techno act Hybrid, Delerium, Eric Kupper, DJ Dimitri, DJ Silver, Kid Congo Powers (of the Cramps and NickCave), Sven Van Hees, Certain General, Piethopraxis, The Hot Heads, Biftek and Moodswings, among others. She has co-written and sung numerous tracks on Khan's last three CD releases and she performs regularly with him in the US and Europe. Julee's vocals frequently appear on international compilations too numerous to mention, TV commercials and TV and movie soundtracks.
Julee lives in Manhattan with her husband Edward Grinnan and their dogs.

Fine service, great music and fast shipping!

I think it's a great cd ! And I think CD baby is a breath of fresh air! Very personal approach.

However, I think somewhere on this page should be mentioned that when you order this cd you get a cd-r.

At first I was really disappointed by that because i was expecting a pressed disc. CD baby explained that the artist did not have the means to have the cd properly pressed. Still a bit of a disappointment though.

Julee Rocks!!!
Two wonderful and a little bit creepy songs by Julee Cruise. If you like her Floating Into The Night and The Voice Of Love albums, you gonna love these new songs. Thanks to CD BABY for fast shipping from US to Finland!
