CUARTETO ENSAMBLE

Born in 1994, play chamber music with string instruments of the Colombia. This quartet has recorded three (3) musical works , " Ensamble ", "Danza del Cuervo" and "Ensamble y Cuerdas". They have performed in Colombia, Spain, United States and Brazil.

The quartet disbanded in 2003 and since 2013 has restarted work in the Symphony "Anima Mundi Est" from the composer Hector Fabio Torres.

HISTORY

Ensamble is born in the Comfenalco Quindio music school under the direction of professor Clara Teresa Restrepo. Later, they continue studies with composer and guitarist Hector Fabio Torres, music theory professor at the Universidad de Caldas.

In their workwith professor Torres, Ensamble learns to apply various instrumental techniques and influences from various musical styles and periods as resources for the statement of their own musical thought.

Based on this premise, Ensamble showcases its work and is recognized in the most renowned Andean music contests in Colombia. These include a nomination to the “Gran Mono Nunez” at the Festival Mono Nunez in Ginebra, Valle, first place at the “Hato Viejo” Festival in Bello, Antioquia and the Festival Nacional del Pasillo in Aguadas, Caldas. To this date, Ensamble has recorded three compact discs with original works and been invited to the most prestigious concert venues in the country.

Ensamble’s musical vision evolves through its work with Hector Fabio Torres from a typical instrumental group that performs Colombian Andean music to a chamber group that creates their own interpretive style of the bandola (12 string instrument), tiple (12 string instrument) and the guitar, based on universal composing techniques and aesthetic concepts that emerge from new generations.


QUARTET’S ACTIVITIES

In 1995 Ensamble participates for the first time in the “Mono Nuñez” festival with “Suite Modal,” an original work by Hector Fabio Torres written in the Renaissance style. There, the Quartet obtains a nomination to the first place and wins the audience’s acceptance for its youth and its performance of an innovative yet gratifying work. That same year, the quartet participates in the “Hato Viejo” festival in Bello, Antioquia, winning the first prize in the instrumental category and the prize for the best original work with the pasillo (Andean rhythm) “Diabólico.” After participating in these festivals, Ensamble records its first compact disc.

In 1996, Ensamble returns to the “Mono Nunez” festival with another original work by Torres, “Danza del Cuervo,” which marks a rupture with traditional Andean compositional and performance cannons. In addition to this piece, the Quartet interpreted “Prelude and Fugue on Brisas del Pamplonita,” an arrangement by Torres of a traditional Andean tune. This year they also participate in the Festival Nacional del Pasillo Colombiano (National Colombian Pasillo Festival) obtaining first prize in excellence and first prize in composition with the piece “Armero” by Hector Fabio Torres.

At the end of that year, Ensamble records its second compact disc, with a repertoire that seals its style as a continuous search for a transformation of the repertoire for quartet, incorporating elements from contemporary, universal, and rock music.

In 1997, Ensamble gives a concert series in the main concert venues throughout the country despite criticisms by traditionalist musicians, who feel threatened by Ensamble’s work and its search for new paradigms in the interpretation of Colombian music.

In May of 1998 they represent Colombia in the V Festival de Jovenes Europeos (Festival of Young European Musicians) in Barcelona, Spain, becoming the first Latin American musical group ever invited to the festival.

In September of 1999, Ensamble performs at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

In 2001, they record their third compact disc titled “Concierto para Cuarteto Tipico Colombiano y Orquesta de Cuerdas” (Concert for Colombian Typical Quartet and String Orchestra), involving for the first time violins, violas, violoncellos and double bass. The release of the CD takes place at the Leon de Greiff auditorium of the National University of Colombia, featuring the National Philharmonic Orchestra.
