ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

An eclectic mix of classic soul and soul inspired classics, this album pays tribute to the grit, grease and crackle of the R&B/Soul albums of the late 60's and early 70's that shaped me as a singer and continue to thrill me as a fan. These songs have been reimagined by an obscenely talented group of side men who came together on their nights off from gigging with some of the industry's brightest stars including The Roots, Harry Connick Jr., Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Richard Bona and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. What you hear was recorded live to tape, in single takes over just 36 hours in Studio A at Brooklyn's famed The Bunker Studio. More than polish or perfection our desire was to capture the electricity and joy of playing music without a safety net. This has been a lifetime in the making and I hope you have as much fun listening to this album as we did making it. Thank you for supporting live, independent music!

What is Back Alley Soul?
Back Alley Soul is a phrase that was introduced to me, appropriately enough, down in Memphis. A woman came up to me after a gig and said "Down here we got a saying for people like you." Intrigued, I asked "Oh yeah, what's that?" She replied "We call it Back Alley Soul. That's when something seems sweet and pretty at first but then cuts loose, all greasy, rough and nasty." I was totally flattered and remember thinking "Yup, that's just about everything I've ever aspired to be...", and in that moment this album found its name!

Back Alley Soul: Endless-Repeat-Music–Love-Affair
All day, I have been listening to Michael Cunio's Back Alley Soul, and his sound captures an engaging, smoky energy that smoothly thumps fresh with distinct nods to soulful tradition. After restarting the tracks over and over again, I just gave in: BAS is my current endless-repeat-music–love-affair.
