Wild River Review. com/ Curt Jones Solo Release 2011
Curt Jones carefully balances the artistry of technology assisted music and real musicianship with a deft touch on his instruments. Here’s the thing about the latest release entitled Solo by Curt Jones. His decisive and masterfully crafted soundscape of live performed music is a thrill park of funk, soul, rhythm and business. Listen to the first 10 seconds of “Wanna be where you are”. Is music a science? Most music fan’s and connoisseur’s like to look behind the end product into the how, when, why and who of the music, all scientific inquiries. The mathematics and percussive instrumentation let’s you know Curt Jones has been calculating, formulating and in the lab to deliver the goods on the Solo project. Working from inside the ghostly synth/vocal pads, underneath, behind and beside it all there he is. Quantified and qualified Curt Jones. These hot sections will be sampled sooner than later so grab it while you still can in it’s original format. The legendary Stanley Clarke has an album entitled ‘If this bass could talk”, well Curt Jones' guitars talk, scream, laugh and cry. Listen to Curt going for it on “Do what you do”. His vocals yearn for consumption, his lyrics and vocal arrangements are simply right. Curt Jones’ Red Virgo stankness is in form on “Don’t say you want it” reminding us of his fingerprints left on the east coast forensic funk scene as front man and guitarist for Deja, Aurra and The legendary funk group Slave. As Bernie Mack would say, “he’s been on sum damn hot funk records” and this is another one of them, and it’s like “whew”. Another characteristic of this recording is what Curt Jones has lurking in the shadows. Even on not so ritzy earphones this cd sounds real nice. Curt Jones has produced what people who listen “into” music search for, those whose acute sense of hearing are always looking for sounds of the afuche, shakers, clave and “all things off the wall”. What a thought provoking and exciting body of work Curt has submitted for our listening pleasure. Solo has it all. “You should be with me” one of my favorites along with “Maybe it’s love” are some very well placed songs about emotions and the soul of the man Curt Jones. Curt Jones Solo album features talented renowned musicians including the seductive vocals of Sueann Carwell, bassist Bill Brady and Raymond (I Simply Like) Jackson. Complimenting those songs is the anthem “Find a way” reminiscent of why music is a mighty asset to people who believe there’s a way to find real humanity for our world condition. All in all if you were looking for a great music meal at fast funk food prices this is it. I really enjoy the way his hooks repeat on me in the best way. Get one for a friend, lover or someone special who enjoys good music and artist who respect the craft. Thanks Curt, for the gift of music.
