Album Notes
Cynthia Bythell is a performing singer/songwriter/pianist with six albums, published songs, national awards and decades of professional experience. She began as a piano bar player, worked as a cabaret artist, segued into working as the vocalist for a bebop influenced band, had her own jazz trio/quartet, and eventually ran a successful nine-piece swing band. After the swing craze of the 1990’s died down, Cynthia gradually downsized her little big band until she was singing with just guitar and bass. It was light and easy, and for the threesome it was pure musical enjoyment. This session was recorded in the autumn of 2005 after Duncan James, Richard Saunders, and Cynthia had worked a long run on the San Francisco Spirit Bay Cruise. The little group was pressured to play continuous music, so they began to take their breaks separately. Thus, you will hear some tracks with Cynthia Bythell’s sweet and swingin’ vocal backed by consummate guitarist Duncan James and super groovin’ bassist Richard Saunders, and other tracks featuring only vocal and guitar or vocal and bass. Amazingly, all three configurations of this tiny group stayed strong and in the groove as they recorded this album live at Bay Records with no overdubs and no punch-ins. Diggin’ The Downsize was used as a calling card to get more gigs, and was actually never released as an album until 2019. You’ll be snappin’ your fingers, and enjoying the downsize as much these versatile and creative musicians did!
