Album Notes
From a young age, I have been intrigued by and drawn to film music. I remember taking family trips to the cinema as a child and leaving the theater humming the melodies from the score while most of my peers were imagining they were the hero or main character. I was especially drawn to the beautiful horn writing featured in many film scores, and these evocative pieces were very formative in my decision to play the horn.

As I embarked on my musical career, I remained a fan of film scores and took a broader interest in the composers and musicians behind their creation. Were these composers trained specially for film scoring? Where does their music belong regarding performance opportunities? Have they composed pieces other than film scores? These questions led me down a path of research and discovery that helped me find a relatively obscure sub-genre of music.

To my delight, there is much more to the music of film composers than what we see and hear on the big screen. I learned that many film composers have an entire portfolio of concert works including orchestral pieces, operas, musicals, concertos, sonatas, and chamber music. Why is it that I had never heard of most of these pieces? Why are many of them not recorded, and if they are, why are these recordings exceedingly rare? Film composers are some of the most recognizable composers of the modern era to the general public. Their music is heard by millions of people every year both on the big screen, and increasingly in concert settings. However, their pieces intended for concert performance are rarely programmed. All of these questions and realizations inspired me to attempt to bring more attention to these seldom performed pieces by creating this album.
