ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A truly international jazz quartet that masterfully balances strong groove, expressive sophistication, and incredibly rich dynamics, carving through the stylistic diversity of Damjan's compositions. This is music that transcends style but could best be described as sophisticated modern jazz that reflects influences of ECM sounding records - it demands space, touch, and groove - packaged in an emotionally charged performance. Damjan’s style is defined by the immediacy, intensity, quality and sophistication of sound. It is both lyrical and rhythmic and is complimented by his long-time colleague, pianist Matija Dedic - imaginative, mercurial, and always spontaneous and free to take whichever path the moment demans. Dancing between odd-rhythms, funk grooves and fine ambiant musical textures, drummer John Hollenbeck adds subtleties to the music - giving the music depth and an element of the unexpected and locking in with the unshakeable bassist Martin Gjakonovski, who ties it all together with his rich sound and sense of groove.

REVIEWS

"Damjan Krajacic’s 6th recording as a leader, Visions (released on the Aquarius label), consists of 10 of his colorful and impressionistic originals. On such titles as “First Steps,” “War,” “Prayer” and “Space,” Krajacic and his all-star international quartet perform thought-provoking music that blends together innovative modern jazz with the influences of the leader’s Eastern Europe heritage and classical background.

Visions teams Krajacic’s flute with pianist Matija Dedic, bassist Martin Gjakonovski and drummer John Hollenbeck. Their virtuosic playing is at various times dramatic, cinematic, thoughtful and bursting with excitement. Whether grooving on an unusual rhythm, creating atmospheric music or improvising freely (or all three simultaneously), the tight communication between the four masterful musicians is consistently impressive. Their interplay results in performances that build and develop as they progress, taking listeners on colorful musical voyages that are full of surprising destinations.

Among the highlights of the ten selections are “First Steps” (which utilizes a four-note rhythmic pattern as the basis for the piece), the lyrical ballad “A Bright Star,” the way that the musicians build “War” from a repetitive phrase, and the episodic “In Motion.” But Visions needs to be heard as a whole for each selection segues logically into the next one, forming a magical trip through the universe that listeners will not soon forget."
