Dana Cooper Built a Road
This CD represents one of the most recent sections of freeway that Dana Cooper has built in his long career as a singer/songwriter and recording artist. It's not surprising that Dana would choose to write about Harry Truman in the song "Harry Truman Built a Road". After all, Truman was president when Dana was born and they both come from the same geographical area. The poetic lyrics take us on a trip down the symbolic road that Harry Truman built, then traveled by Dana's father, and ultimately by Dana himself. If you were to strip away the lyrics and listen only to the music as if it were a symphony you would hear strength and determination countered by longing and regret. Therein lies the true genius of Dana Cooper. Where most songwriters are doing well if they can attach simple lyrics to a simple melody, Dana's songs communicate on a complex level literally, symbolically, and musically. I have seen Dana perform live numerous times over the years - and although he's only human like the rest of us, just being in his presence is like traveling back in time and shaking hands with Mozart. His level of genius is something that I have not witnessed before in my lifetime and I am admittedly in awe of it. His song "Rise Up Lazarus" reminds us all that miracles can still happen even in an atmosphere of cynicism and skepticism. The rest of the songs are a smorgasbord of style and content that Dana has clearly mastered. If you really want to appreciate the musical and songwriting talents of Dana Cooper don’t just buy this CD – buy every commercial recording he has ever made, beginning in 1973 and up to the present. What you’ve probably heard so far is just the tip of the iceberg. Hear it all and prepare to be blown away!
