Album Notes
This hymn to the high peaks is the culmination of years spent in the Adirondack wilderness, working in its woods and hiking its hills. Words & Music ©2015 Dan Berggren (BMI)
Dan - vocal & guitar; John Kirk - fiddle; Ed Lowman - bass
Recorded & Mixed by Dan at BerggrenFolk Studios, Ballston Spa, NY

Dan Berggren’s roots are firmly in the Adirondacks where he was raised but his music has branched out across many borders. The award-winning musician and educator has entertained audiences throughout New York State, from Kentucky to Texas, Vermont to Michigan, and overseas in Belgium, Bulgaria, Romania and Central Africa.

The 40-year folk veteran held various jobs before devoting his life to music full-time: working in the Adirondack woods with a forest ranger and surveyor, radio producer in Europe, professor of audio and radio studies at SUNY Fredonia, and owner of Sleeping Giant Records which has produced fifteen albums.

Dan's songs explore the many dimensions of home, hard working folks, taking care of our planet and each other.

Author Bill McKibben writes: “Dan Berggren is the sound of the Adirondacks, as much as the water lapping against the granite shore of the lake or the loon echoing in the sunset or the wind tossing the spruce tops.”

"Climbing" review
Listening to Dan Berggren sing is like coming home to a warm house. It's inviting, comforting and familiar, not to mention full of uplifting meanings and reassuring values. The video has a beautiful, raw feel to it with the lovely rotational photographs and video clips embodying the beauty behind the words. Just amazing, both lyrically and visually.

Climbing Soothes Your Soul
Dan Berggren has been weaving a tapestry of tales through his legendary style of writing and singing folk music for over 40 years. "Climbing" not only tells a story, it also creates a vast array of emotions. It allows me to come on this adventure in an almost virtual way. Not only can I visualize the trees, the mountain peaks, and the lakes below, but I imagine the determination it took to get up that high. I can sense each step, the smell of the air, the sound of a creek, and the crunch of pine needles under my feet. I can almost feel the ache in my legs and I stop to catch my breath and continue on. Then, as I move away from the literal part of this pilgrimage, I am reminded of the inspirational messages of perseverance and accomplishment this song brings to light. What a feeling of elation to have made it to the top! I am a distance runner and can relate to the vast array of emotions that I encounter including that intense feeling of euphoria that I get as I cross the finish line. As with many of Dan's other pieces, I connect deeply to the overwhelming, and often underlying, messages this song has to offer. Whether it be a success at work, the rewards of raising a family, or making your way up that mountain, this song conveys the distinct feelings you get when you can sit back and say "I did it!"

Close your eyes and reach the Peak!
Listening to "Climbing" transports me back to the mountains, vistas and peaks of the Adirondacks. While sitting in my Pennsylvania home, all I need to do is close my eyes and I am back to one of the most beautiful places on Earth. "Climbing" makes me feel like I can accomplish anything and everything. Thanx Dan for all the inspiration!

Climbing the mountains, going home
Dan embodies the path we walk and then the pride felt as we reach the summit of an Adirondack peak in his song Climbing. I go to the wilderness to go home and when I can’t, I listen to Dan’s music and it transports me there. He is able to bring the comfort and pure energy of the mountains, lakes and streams into my heart through his melodies and lyrics.

"Climbing" Review
"Climbing" is everything we have come to expect and love from Adirondack songwriter Dan Berggren. Rooted in place but not bound to it, the song wends its way surely and steadily towards a chorus that instantly gains elevation, poking it's head through the clouds as Berggren moves into his upper register: "Climbing, never thought that I would." Berggren makes use of the natural metaphors presented to him by the subject with subtlety, deftly avoiding heavy handedness as he leads us to, up, and over the "mountains" we each climb every day.
The space left in the mix despite the presence of both a bass and fiddle, along with Berggren's sparce and tasteful guitar accompaniment, gives the song an airy feel that places the listener smack on top of an Adirondack High Peak. It's no more and no less than it needs to be, and as Dan Berggren's writing so routinely is, it's just right.

Buy this song!
Climbing is a song about accomplishment: about setting goals, overcoming self-doubt, and rising to the top. It is a song about the beauty of mountains, and about focus, flow, and inner growth. Anyone with hopes and dreams needs to hear this song. And sing it. It will be the best 99 cents you've ever spent.

Climbing gets a HIGH mark!
"Climbing" perfectly captures the musings and visions of a climber hiking the Adirondack high peaks. Dan has truly mastered the art of using song to paint pictures of experiences in nature and has hit a HIGH mark with "Climbing".

A feel-good Adirondack folk song to lift your spirits.
"Climbing" is an uplifting piece of Adirondack Folk which speaks to the heart of those who love the journey of hiking, climbing, and adventuring in the mountains. The song is reminiscent of an old hymn both in sound and in its reverent tone. A wonderful song you'll be listening to again and again.
