ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Sanchez family is struggling to live and stay in the United States as they face prejudice against dreamers and possible deportation. This heart-wrenching opera-stage play depicts an event that will forever shape the lives of a father, a mother and of Angelica, the family’s young daughter, conceived in the United States but born in Mexico. Through the prism of Angelica's eyes, the story unfolds while referencing children’s fables, such as Humpty Dumpty, Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. These songs illustrate the child’s innocence, yet describe a darker reality. The story is unified symbolically with a tango, The Dance of the Rose, danced by each family member throughout the Opera.

Set in Chicago and at the border of El Paso and Juarez, Mexico, this composition addresses controversial current American political issues, including immigration, riots, court scenes and ICE raids. Even though her mother is murdered and her father is deported, Angelica is given a hopeful future when she is rescued by two heroic characters.

Conceived in the Chicago area, the album was actually produced in Atlanta with a talented cast of vocalists associated with the Atlanta Opera. Daniel Solberg conducted a talented orchestra of freelance musicians and Brian Stephens mixed and mastered the recording.
