ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
To quote Michael Steinman of "Jazz Lives" who crafted our liner notes:
"Although every song on this disc has deep associations (Billie, Bechet, Fats, and others) and many are jazz / pop classics, this session is homage, not to the old records, but to the Music. The innovators heard the OKehs, Paramounts, and Deccas, but then incorporated that sacred knowledge into their own selves. I believe that when Mark conceived of these duets with Danny, the hallowed model was the music Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines recorded ninety years ago. But Danny and Mark, candid, subtle, and proud, play their personalities rather than attempt to clone the holy relics. The result is a series of masterful improvisations, honoring the past, alive now.
The friendship and respect these two players have for each other is audible. This disc is a delighted interchange, not a martial arts tournament. And each man is a master of what Louis called Tonation and Phrasing. As well, they are Knights of the Middle Register, noblemen of Medium Tempo. They sing without words; they write short stories in Sound. And they honor the essential seasonings Dick Wellstood called Grease and Funk.
I am sure that Basie was in the studio with a big grin on his face."
