ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
In 2002 Dan Senn was asked to present a series of workshops at the new Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, its inaugural event, which would tie into the work of John Cage who’s paper art works were part of the exhibition. Dan’s work had been greatly influenced by this artist who he had befriended in 1987. Senn decided on a translation of the I Ching into sound using a graphic notation he had developed where graphic symbols were used to notate complex sound textures for performance by untrained musicians. This effort suggested a potential for translating hexagrams into sound textures, where one could seek judgments from the I Ching for sounds rather than decisions about everyday life. For example, a question could be formed like "What sounds would be useful in this space and at this time?" Using the I Ching rules of divination, a set of hexagrams and associated set of graphic symbols called Lycons would result. Therefore, a performer could consult the I Ching, produce one or more hexagrams, or additional performers would do likewise to produce a complex set of hexagrams all from the same query. These would then be presented, the divination process part of the performance, to form compositions of meaning and beauty. In 2016, living in both Watertown, Wisconsin, and Prague, The Czech Republic, he recorded the 64 Lycons as derived from the 64 Hexagrams of the I Ching from which these Lyconbinate recordings were derived. Note: Each track on this recording combines two or more lycon performances simultaneously (mixed together) thus the title lyconbinate to create a single performance.
