Album Notes
Dan Strauss is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Brooklyn, NY. It is difficult to put his songs into one genre as they move in and out of alt-country, indie-folk, jazz and rock. Melodies that are at once simple and haunting surround intimate lyrics that address themes both personal and universal. Guitars, piano, peddle steel and violin intertwine as a bed for Dan’s rich and subtle voice. All of these elements combine to create a unique yet familiar sound. Listeners will hear influences that include Wilco, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Josh Rouse and John Lennon.

Dan originally hails from Queens, NY where he started plunking away at the piano at a young age, figuring out how to play songs from records he could not stop listening to. Sitting with headphones on and an album cover in his hand was everything needed to start a life-long love affair with songwriting. In his twenties, he picked up the guitar and began writing songs of his own. He has been performing for the last 20 years and has independently released three albums.

In 2013, Dan began recording new songs at Coldbrook Studios in Woodstock in NY with producer/engineer Julie Last (who has worked with Joni Mitchell, Liz Phair, Shawn Colvin and John Lennon). The Woodstock region has long been a place that has inspired Dan’s writing and it was dream fulfilled to be able to record there. “Crossed Wires” is one of the songs from these sessions. It is a song about what it means to love unconditionally. Originally drawn from the idea of a child with autism trying to make sense of the world and a parent’s reassurance that “no matter what happened, I’ll always love you”, the song eventually became larger in scope - a reminder that we all are trying to make sense of the world and we all need this reassurance - from someone. From anyone.
