Album Notes
Tyler Dempsey (drums), Matt Vashlishan (wind synthesizer), and Joe Michaels (electric bass) formed Dark Square out of the traditional jazz trio format. Saxophone, acoustic bass, and drum set offer the most freedom for musicians in terms of harmonic experimentation and rhythmic interaction. This electronic group was created by changing acoustic bass to electric bass, and swapping saxophone for the electric wind instrument (a wind driven synthesizer). The trio focuses on standard jazz repertoire that fits the straight 8th-note nature of modern electric music. Combining these instruments with jazz standards offers a fresh approach to the tradition, and serves as a palette for sonic experimentation with a bit of jazz lineage, too.
