Album Notes
Hi. My name is Dirk.

In short: I was born in North Germany, grew up in North New Jersey and play a Maton acoustic. Any more...? Here's the lowdown:I used to play in a band called "The Jeremy Days" who were kinda cool, ...most times. I now run "Tapete Records" in Hamburg with my friend Gunther. A lotta really neat bands/artists are out on tapete including The Horror The Horror, Lacrosse, The Elephants,Maplewood, Downpilot, Salim Nourallah, Tess Wiley, etc. etc. etc. plus my own stuff.

I started tapete mainly cause I was sick of recording for labels that weren’t really listening to the albums their own artists were releasing there (my band was on a major label for 7 years!!)

Right, my albums come out on tapete too. The latest one is called "Our Favorite City" and is...ah...greeeaaat ;-) I recorded the album at Lee Russel’s place in Ringstead, Kettering U.K.Lee bought the local village chapel and built this totally amazing studio filled with outrageously cool vintage gear (amps, mics, guitars, pianos, harmoniums, etc. etc)...all set up and ready to go.

My good friend and drummer Lars Plogschties, Lee and myself got everything on tape in 10 days. Great fun.

I've put out two albums so far under my own name. Before that three albums as 'Me And Cassity'. These are nice too,..hee hee. Check em out.... Greets. Dirk

A few words of Introduction.... by Salim Nourallah (Dallas 2007)

When I first started telling people here in Texas about Dirk Darmstaedter they'd ask me, "Well, who would you compare him too?" Neil Finn immediately came to mind. One reason being, Dirk's first band Jeremy Days had some big early hits. So, at a young age Dirk tasted the fruits of success. For many songwriters this signals the beginning of artistic demise but, like Finn, it was just the start of better things to come. Dirk Darmstaedter has been making records now since 1989 and amazingly with each one he keeps getting better and better - honing his craft further and zeroing in on the perfect mark.

"Our Favorite City" is Darmstaedter's 12th studio record (including 3 with Me and Cassity and 5 with Jeremy Days). I think it's his best cd yet. Chalk full of great tunes and words. It was recorded with Lee Russell in England in a renovated old church. The good vibe there soaked into every groove of this record. You can hear how much fun these guys had making it. The production is classic and uncluttered. Mellotrons and layered harmonies abound. Guitar textures to admire and great drumming from Lars Plogschties - a Ringo for 2007. It's obvious upon first listen that Dirk has impeccable taste in pop music. He's distilled all the musical greats into his own style. When I hear this record I can't help but play "spot the influences..." So pardon me if I do a little."We Beat the Drum" starts out a wee bit like Trash Can Sinatras with a nifty tremolo guitar line but it's got a walloping chorus that makes me think again of Mr. Finn. This is a great tune. I'd like to cover it but this version is so good - what's the point? "Shirly and Nancy" with its Kinks-like shuffle and wonderful mellotrons. Jellyfish meets Jon Brion. Do you know those guys? Well, you should.Dirk's falsetto vocals are sublime on this one. "I Won't Give Up On You" with its beautiful acoustic guitars and insistent rhythm section; honest and pure lyrics. Paul McCartney would've chopped off his ex-bride's left leg to have penned this one. "The Second Hand Life" and its yearning for a better life is classic Darmstaedter. A song about regular people dreaming of breaking out of the mundane. Once again, the vocals are spectacular. "Trigger Happy" ends it all with another stellar vocal - if Dylan could sing like a bird he'd be Dirk Darmstaedter on this track.

If this is your first time hearing Dirk Darmstaedter, well then, this is as good as any place to start. Almost 20 years crafting pop records and still going stronger than ever. "Our Favorite City" is the work of a songwriter at the top of his game. Something to aspire to.
