Album Notes
Rapidly becoming the most lyrically fascinating independent folk act on Vancouver Island, Dave Kilbank & Paul Bezooyen proudly unveil their extraordinary sophomore album, Fire on the Horizon, at Nanaimo Folk Connection on Friday February 19th. Just over two years have passed since the release of the philanthropic duo’s collaborative full length debut, Travelers, an album of contemplative songs considering some of the myriad aspects of what it is to be human, navigating life’s unpredictable journey on a tiny world in an infinite universe. Fire on the Horizon picks up where Travelers left off, delving even deeper this time in examining further weighty universal themes, and issues confronting us all.
Kilbank is the host of CHLY 101.7 FM’s Songwriters Circle radio show, while Bezooyen founded the ever-evolving Nanaimo record label, The Hermit’s Music. Possessed of an intuitive musical understanding and complementary musicianly qualities, together they create melodic acoustic landscapes in which to explore the complexities of human emotions, fears, insecurities and triumphs. Fire on the Horizon has been immaculately crafted under an overarching leitmotif of, to quote the artists, “challenging beliefs about ourselves and the world we live in, and staying on course when there always seems to be a ‘fire on the horizon.’” It is, without doubt, the first truly vital local folk music release of 2016.
