ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Practice Rhythms for Belly Dance
Drum Solo: Repeating Patterns
Two important aspects of working with a live drum solo are improvisation and repeating patterns.

On this recording:
• 12 different repeating drum solo patterns.
• One-minute track of each pattern for practice and idea building.
• Short tracks of 4 measures of each pattern for improv practice and building your own improv drum solo. Shuffle the patterns for a different experience each time or combine them in sequence to your liking.
• Resource list of movement options and framework guide.

Kim Leary and Dave Merritt, co-directors of The Drum & Dance Learning Center have crafted this resource with the creative dancer in mind. This is a great guide for those who are just beginning to work on drum solos and live performance as well as a tool for creative idea building for the experienced dancer. Have fun and enjoy!

How to Use This Recording

Repeating Patterns One-Minute Tracks
There are twelve one-minute tracks, each with a different repeating pattern. The one-minute tracks are designed to allow you to get your creative juices flowing and play with multiple ideas with one rhythmic pattern. Use this as a warm up to working with the shuffle tracks.

Try these ideas as you work through each of the patterns:
CONTRAST
Big/Small
High/Low
Upper body/lower body
In place/traveling
Front/Back
Internal/External

DIRECTION CHANGE
¼ Turns
½ Turns
Change angle
Face front/Face back

Repeating Patterns Shuffle Tracks
There are twelve shorter tracks of each pattern that repeats 4 times only. This playlist is designed to give you the challenge of improv with repeating patterns, as you would experience in a live music performance setting. Make a playlist of short tracks only. Put it on shuffle and dance to a different improv drum solo each time.

All of the ideas listed above can and should be explored in this fast paced exercise.

Things to remember about building interesting improv:
• Listen to the first four counts while keeping time with a simple movement to figure out the accents of each new rhythmic idea; Go for it on 2nd, 3rd & 4th repetitions!
• Consider keeping time with your hips or another isolation as you collect information in the first four counts. Also consider, a slow four-count turn while listening to the new idea in the pattern.
• Think about each new rhythmic idea being different from the previous one, think contrast. For example: Rhythmic idea ONE in place then you may choose to travel a bit with Rhythmic idea TWO.
• Listen to the sounds and let them guide your movement. Possibilities are high sounds guide upper body movement and low sounds guide lower body movement. Fast sounds make fast movement and slower sounds or accents make slower movement or accented movement.

These ideas are just a guide and do not set any rules of absolute. I encourage you to come up with concepts and ideas that add to a fun and exciting improv experience.
