My "Go-to" CD
When I have time to listen to music purely for enjoyment, this CD has become more and more my "go-to" CD with each listen. There are some gems on this CD that, with each listen, will reveal more of their many layers to your delight. For example, listen to the tremolo bath at 2:36 in the song “Cruise Control” or the counter-melody provided Leslie Beukelman on “Spinning the Story. “ If you didn’t hear it the first time, that’s because you were overwhelmed by every other nuance in this brilliant CD.
This CD is masterful for 2 basic reasons: the songwriting and the playing. The songwriters have collectively put together a diverse collection of sounds while maintaining a consistent style. “I’d Be Crazy” compares with any classic singer-songwriter’s better song. In addition, the musicianship is flawless from all contributors. Whether the pedal steel in “Incognito Ploy” or the bass solos at the end of “Right Mind,” you will be awed at what these players can achieve. Never overplayed; just played correctly.
For me, the 2 stand-out tracks on this CD are “Right Mind” and “This Is Home.” “Right Mind” is the perfect pop/rock song, complete with “Da Da Dum” fade outs that rival “Hey Jude” for their catchiness. Meanwhile “This Is Home” will ricochet you into a deep nostalgia for everything that you love, that you cherish and that you miss.
This CD is strengthened by another fabulous production from Populist Recording. This studio has a few regulars in its stable including The Morningsides, Cptn Captain, and The Visitor, but I believe that it has pulled out all stops, without overproducing, on all tracks.
